Want a small Carry 1911

I will second the Springfield Micro Compact based on my friends example.
A third. A friend has one as a carry gun and I was VERY impressed by its concealability, controllability, reliability and accuracy. Additionally, they're often heavily discounted.

The local gun store has a Springfield Micro Compact. I think I went by four times to fondle it. Oh, I lusted after that gun! But, I couldn't pony up the $950 for it. Then, I thought hard about the RIA Compact Tactical. I've heard nothing but good things about the gun and great things about their tech support over on m1911.org. I had a line on a new one for $450 shipped to me. But, I ended up deciding on a G36. Package wise, it's a little smaller than the Compact (if you count the tang) in length and also a little shorter in height. Width wise, it's even. The G36 is lighter, has the same capacity, and the barrel is a little longer than the Officer's model (3.76 vs 3.5).

I still intend to get a 1911. But, not an Officer's or Compact version. Probably something like a Kimber Pro Carry. I start saving for it Tuesday on my next paycheck.

My daily carry is a Colt officer mod.3-5/8 barrel I had reliability work done and its been 100%.Its a little heavy but after a few months of carry It becomes a non Issue.I have ultra lights in j frames,Kahrs, ect but the colt is what I carry.
Its accurate ,dependable, and controllable. With a good belt and IWB holster it conceals very well,no you dont forget its there but its not at all uncomfortable.
Bob.

Ever consider moving to a 40 S&W? That's why they were developed, to give officers almost the power of the 45 (only slightly less than 45 but plenty more than 9mm) but in a 9mm frame size. The SigSauer P239 is a small carry weapon (used by Navy seals as their backup carry) with a great reputation. I've carried this and shot it for years. Just my 2 cents.

You are right! Get a Officer's sized gun (grip frame) and shoot it and carry it. Width of gun and grip length is the key to carrying. Don't waist $$$ and go through six different guns and even more holsters before you discover you were right in the first place.
You should also have a full size version of the same gun you carry, and shoot a lot.
I could recommend STI. The Escort is a wonderful compact .45 and the Trojan is a great full size companion.

The Springfield EMP 9mm, has got to be the smallest:)

But I'm very happy with my Kimber UCII, with a set of thin Alumagrips.

On the previous question about the forward rear sight; that is a Detonics design feature. It is supposedly to facilitate thumb-cocking when carrying with the hammer down.

I had one of the High Standard Crusader Compact .45 1911's (Armscor), and it was very accurate but was still a little tight. The extractor had not broke in yet and occasionally would not return to battery unless you gave it a little nudge. But again, it just wasn't broken in yet. Accuracy was very good. From 7 yards, I could shoot biscuit-sized groups all day long. I sold it so that I could afford to buy a motorcycle, but when my Christmas bonus check comes, I'm buying another one! My carry piece until then is a Colt Govt. 380 in blued/parkerized finish.
