REM MOHAWK 600. mine was a 222 re chambered for 5.56. but they come in 243. & i would love to add that cal. to the old gun cabinet. I shoot 55gr hollow points. it has no probs knocking dogs down. i think its what most would call a walking rifle. Not sure. but i love it. Its small & very accurate little rifle.
GO BIGGGGGGGGGGGG REDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD go big red. thats for you HGUNHNTR

If you want to shoot bigger bullets like 69gr SMK or 75gr Hornady BTHP, then go with 1:9. For 1:12 stay with 60gr and under.

You'll have to excuse my newbness but....

Can the 1:9 twist shoot 60 grain and under bullets with no problem?

I guess what I want to know is if the 1:9 is a better all around barrel?

How does the Remington SPS compare to the VS SFII (the one with the stainless fluted barrel)? Which is more accurate and durable? I ask because the SPS seems to be getting a lot of good marks and costs about 1/2 the price of the VS SFII. Thanks.

the VSSF has a bell&carlson stock with a aluminum bedding block I had 1 in a 220 Swift it is a very solid feeling rifle and mine was super accurate

I have shot 36, 40, 50, 55, 60, 63, 69, and 75gr bullets in my 1:9 barrel.

The 36 Barnes VG were not that great in my rifle. About .75in @ 100 yards or so. Compared to ~.5in @ 100 yards for the other sizes. These are 5 shot groups, so to compare, many of my 3shot groups are in the .3's.

The 75gr were Hornady BHTP, not the A-Max.

i would op for the .223 either bolt action or AR15 , experiment with different bullet weights and manufacturerers, if you hand load a .223 and use a bolt gun it should do everything out to 300 yards.

or get a AR15 Varminter rifle -Bushmaster makes good varmint AR15 with stainless 22-24" fluted barrels for longer ranges. Also opt for the 5.56 NATO barrel which will give you little more accuracy at longer ranges in an AR15 get a 20 inch barrel or longer the 16 " barrels are ok too.

My Bushmaster 11.5" with 5.5" flash ****ter is not bad out to 150 yards i can still hit what i want.

Preferred centerfire varmint caliber: .223 Rem (with honorable mentions to .22-250 and .204 Ruger and maybe a few others like .22 hornet, .218 bee, .19 calhoon, .221 fireball, .17 Rem, .220 swift, and .17 Rem fireball)

Preferred action: Turnbolt (or maybe an accurized AR15)

Preferred rifle make: Take your pick -there are many many great ones offered in .223. Among turnbolts, look at the Savage 25s and the other Savages (10/11/12/14), as well as the Weatherby Vanguards, the Howas, the Remingtons, the CZ 527s, on and on....

FWIW, I ran with the .223 Rem in a "Sub-MOA" Weatherby Vanguard with 1 in 12", and it's both nice looking and accurate, and not TOO heavy to tote around at just over 8 lbs before scope/rings.

I guess what I want to know is if the 1:9 is a better all around barrel?

Yes, it is the better "all around" twist rate. As for the best "varminting" twist rate, then it's arguable either way.

Here's my .25-06

25_06_Side.jpg

25_06_Bore.jpg

Hougue Overmold full aluminum block
Timney trigger
Shilen #7 contour 26" barrel 1-10 twist
Leupold VX-III 6.5x-14x 40mm (getting something different)
Harris bi-pod
Action tuned/trued
Best 3 shot group at 100 yards was .290"

I've shot it out to 1,000 yards and it is quite accurate, though wind is a factor at that range. For commercial ammo, Hornady Light Magnum 117 grain BTSP were leaving the barrel at a shade over 3,200 fps. Now I need to start reloading for it.

Might want to try the Marlin XS7 in .243 Winchester. Good long range ballistics with the 80 grain PSP. Better than the .223 or .22-250 55 grain commercial loads at the 400-500 yard range.

I have a winchester model 70 featherweight classic in 22-250, and a remington varmiter in 22-250, and a remington 725 in 222rem. all have had the barrels freefloated and use handloads. I use them mostly for shooting crows. the winchester shoots best followed closely by the .222rem. the 222 does not have the range that the 22-250,s have.

DR505,
What make is your .25-06? It looks nice.

Also, how do the Weatherby's stack up accuracy wise against Remingtons, Savages, Rugers, and other big names? Thanks.

For alot less money you can get an upper for your bushy in .204, or 223 in a varmint configuration and throw a good scope on it and turn your one rifle into two.

I would at least look into this!

If you don't want to I'd go with a .223, cheap and it works. You could always work up to a better caliber if you need to later. I'd consider used so you don't loose any money if you do trade up........

YMMV,

Tony

Does anyone have any experience with the Winchester Coyote or the new Winchester Coyote Lite? How is the trigger and accuracy?

Win Coyote from ~8 years ago.... Fit and finish, ok but barrel not even in channel. Trigger was CRAP, gunsmith at place of purchase fixed it for free. Shoots good, not super but I'm not great either. I still have it and it still works. Laminated stock, stainless barrel in .223.

I have Remingtons and Savages in 17HMR,204,220 Swift,223,22-250,22-250AI,22BR,6BR,243,and 308.All varmint heavy barrels with Harris S bipods.Nikon,Burris, and Leupold scopes. All the Savages are tack drivers. Also can change barrel out to differant calber without much trouble. Use them all on PD. 22-250 best all around cal. in my opinion.

It is a Remington 700. I had an old .270 action laying around and a gunsmith friend built that as a project gun to return a favor. I debated making it a .30-06, .35 Whelen, a .338-06, and a couple others, but had plenty of larger caliber rifles...so went with .25-06. I may make it an AI soon.

I'll be reloading a bunch of varmint rounds for testing soon. Somewhere in the vicinity of 85 grain bullets....

I was talking to a buddy today and he told me to look into .243. Any thoughts?

Also, I almost pulled the trigger on a Remington 700 SPS 22-250 today. I found one at Dick's for $549 with a Remington scope already mounted. It looked like a good deal. Especially when you look at the $40 Remington mail in rebate on top of that. Did I miss the boat on that one?

Oh well. It didn't feel right. I am sort of leaning towards the .223 since the rounds are half the price and it should fit all my needs. Plus I really like the 22" vtr barrels vs. the 26" sps barrels.

Here's mine.

An LTR .223 I "re tasked".

I just got it the way I want it, it's gone through several changes since I got it. I guess if I think about all of the parts, it's probably taken me about 4 years to get it where it is.

I would rather have 25-06 over .243 and I have shot both, only positive to 243 is lighter bullets and short action to me. I'd still go w/ the .223 shoot lots of cheap bullets and learn to love this bolt shooting thing and then get a "big" gun that suites your needs at that point.......

i sure would like to see whats left after a 25-06 hits a ground hog.

ground hog :)
