i want to fire at the 2 and 300 yard targets. anyone have a suggestion on whats cheap, decent irons, can be single shot but would prefer reepeater

You could get a Stevens 200

and add XS Ghost rings. You would end up close to 400 bucks.

You could also look for a Remington Model Seven Youth in .223. They come with irons. I bought one to shoot with irons and it works quite well with the factory Remington sights.

Good luck,

Matt

You could get a CZ 527 Lux, Carbine, or FS, and then put an aperture sight on it. It'd be $600 or so for the rifle, plus $90 for a nice rear sight.

I just did a google for a Norinco JW-105 but I couldn't find any stateside. They'd be cheap if you can find them.

CZ; since no one else in america even makes a rifle under 500 with any rear or front sites at all, might as well go with one of the best, with the best accuracy.

I've been on the same quest as the OP, and after searching high and low, the CZ 527 carbine was what I came up with. It really does seem like the best option here.

What purpose do you need it to serve? I need a new centerfire mainly for target plinking, with the possibility of harvesting small game. A Saiga in .223 would have been my first option for the price, but good luck ever finding one in this market. Kel-Tec's SU-16 is cheap as well, but again its a matter of finding one.

So if a tactical-ish semiauto plinker is out of the picture, I suppose you might as well get a nice accuracte bolt rifle, like the CZ The Remington 700 SPS Tactical is a close second second choice, but I prefer iron sights for most shooting practice. The cheaper bolts don't appeal to me, especially if they don't come with iron sights.

The other option is buying a single-shot NEF Handi-rifle or the like, those are cheap and many of them have iron sights. It's cheap, .223, and available still.

Good luck with your quest, I'm in the same boat, and will probably pick up the CZ 527. It's just going to have to wait a few weeks until I take care of some other expenses, so I hope there are some left. Everything that is .223 is in short supply... even brass! I may say heck with it and get a .257 Roberts...

It's funny, I was looking for just this kind of thing for a long time. I more or less settled on the Handi-Rifle, but gave up my quest altogether out of frustration.

I settled for a Savage Mark II FVT. Rising ammunition costs were part of what nudged me in that direction.

I really like these...

They are just about a wash in terms of price w/ the CZ, it is American Made (yeah this still matters to me), and the action seems smoother to me.

I also like the internal magazine. Those CZ's just don't carry right to me.

The iron sights on my work great and I don't have a problem with the short stock. I am 6'2" 220. It actually shoulders much like a shotgun to me.

well looks like i cant find a cheap bolt gun so im looking at rossi and nef now

Go with the NEF..

some guys in my hunting club have had some bad experiences with the Rossi opening up after being fired.

NEF's are great and customer service is generally good. You can also send it back to them to have another bbl fitted.

Nothing wrong with using a single shot.
