As a first handgun I would always recommend a revolver. You load it, and it's loaded, none of that "I didn't know a semi-auto would fire without a clip" foolishness. Simple straightforward, and if you have it in 38 special, it will be cheaper to shoot(a lot cheaper!) than a 10mm, and you can buy the ammo almost anywhere.(even Ace hardware, which I think is weird)

22 revolver period learn the basics. then go get the glock 40 or 10mm. even better get a S&W 610, you can shoot both 40 and 10mm.
