Hey all,
I've been here about 2 months now and so far I like Texas. One of the things I was looking forward to doing when I got here was doing some Hog Hunting. Since I don't have the money to pay a lease or pay daily fees, I am pretty much on Public land or if I were to find a homeowner that would welcome me on his place to hunt.
From where I'm at I gather that Sam Houston Nat'l Forest is the closest, then Davy Crockett and then Granger WMA. I've never seen any of them, but have read and heard some interesting stories. Seems like hunting in SHNF is TOUGH and hogs will be very difficult to even see let alone get a chance at a shot with a bow at one. The Hogs at SMNF are said to be almost entirely nocturnal. I don't know much about the other 2 places.
So I'd like to see if there is anyone here that can give me a helping hand or a leg up, if you will. I don't expect to kill a hog every time I hit the woods, but I would at least like to SEE a hog every now and again and have the chance of taking one if I do my part.
I have also been told that there are farmers and ranchers in the rice growing counties that would welcome hog hunters to their land to get rid of their hogs with bells on and a 6 pack of your favorite adult beverage. They are desperate down there to get rid of them. That's all fine and dandy to post on an internet forum, but without a name or directions, what good does it do?
Is there anyone that would like to mentor a new Texan trying to bag his first Trad Kill? I sure would appreciate any help that can be offered. Not wanting to deer hunt, hunt exotic or anything other than these BIG, GNARLY,NASTY and MEAN as HECK Texas Hogs......
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
