Hey all,

I've been here about 2 months now and so far I like Texas. One of the things I was looking forward to doing when I got here was doing some Hog Hunting. Since I don't have the money to pay a lease or pay daily fees, I am pretty much on Public land or if I were to find a homeowner that would welcome me on his place to hunt.

From where I'm at I gather that Sam Houston Nat'l Forest is the closest, then Davy Crockett and then Granger WMA. I've never seen any of them, but have read and heard some interesting stories. Seems like hunting in SHNF is TOUGH and hogs will be very difficult to even see let alone get a chance at a shot with a bow at one. The Hogs at SMNF are said to be almost entirely nocturnal. I don't know much about the other 2 places.

So I'd like to see if there is anyone here that can give me a helping hand or a leg up, if you will. I don't expect to kill a hog every time I hit the woods, but I would at least like to SEE a hog every now and again and have the chance of taking one if I do my part.

I have also been told that there are farmers and ranchers in the rice growing counties that would welcome hog hunters to their land to get rid of their hogs with bells on and a 6 pack of your favorite adult beverage. They are desperate down there to get rid of them. That's all fine and dandy to post on an internet forum, but without a name or directions, what good does it do?

Is there anyone that would like to mentor a new Texan trying to bag his first Trad Kill? I sure would appreciate any help that can be offered. Not wanting to deer hunt, hunt exotic or anything other than these BIG, GNARLY,NASTY and MEAN as HECK Texas Hogs......

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I don't live in Texas so I can't help you there. But...

The title of your thread intrigued me because that is why I originally got into to hog hunting. They were slated as these giant, aggressive and damn near bulletproof evil things roaming the woods and swamps hellbent on killing you. No joy.

As far as I can tell they are just as if not more skittish than any other animals, and so far have only become aggressive after they have been shot, which is understandable.

Of course they still are a problem for landowners and farmers, but I have yet to come across any pig willing to come after me, the damn things always seem to run away.

Houston area???? The hookers on Westpark are probably your best bet....

Just Jokes....

I am about 30 miles north of the SHNF. Id like to help you out, but the drought we went through this year with ponds, small streams, etc. dried up, they pretty much disappeared from my area. Haven't even seen a roadkill hog in a while.

Course the area has been getting a fair amount of rain so they may be back soon.

Like all things nowadays, every sports call s for the mighty dollar. Unless you live in the country and they know you, they might let you hunt for free.
If you want to go by the public lands thats the best way to go. If you want some meat to bring home and have that itchy trigger finger for a real kill, try the local high fence ops . How about Langley Ranch in Centerville about north of Huntsville ? You
ll spent sum but surely will get meat for the freezer.

I was just home for Christmas and i can tell you that North cleveland is having one hell of a problem. Just on the southern side of Sam forrest. IIRC they had a craigslist add up for one farm/plot.

A couple of the less hunted WMAs in the DCNF, Angelina NF area seem to have hogs on them pretty consistently. Hunting access to texas WMAs requires a $48 Type II public land permit though.
