Want to turn my Mossberg 500 into a nice Home Defense weapon.

I have a Mossy 590, 20" brl. 8+1 shot, Ghost ring sights, 6-shot side saddle, heat sheild, Houge overmold fore end grip, Speedfeed pistol grip full stock with shell holders. The recoil seems a lot less with the pistol grip stock, guess you have more control, plus the shotty just looks bad ass. Very accurate aswell, I can blow slugs into a paper plate at 100 yards all day. Well that was just my 2 cents of a few ideas that work for me.

Pistol grip stocks are a no-no on a mossberg because of the safety location, turning a wonderfully designed and ergonomic weapon into one with one of the hardest safeties to actuate i've seen.

a standard stock mossberg with a light and a butt-cuff is a beautiful thing.

I don't have a digital cam, but will ask my Father if I could use his to take a few pics. I'll try this weekend if I go over to their house.

A. Partisan,

I don't really use slugs that much, but did when sighting in. I beleive they were 3" rifled slugs from Federal. I did shoot some slugs a few weekends ago that a buddy had with him. I would sugest shooting slugs first, that way you won't feel it as much towards the end or your range session. We usually shoot steel targets set at 35, 50, 75, 100 yards out. Once you get your sights where you want them, it's no problem to nail 100 yards.

Now that you've mentioned that about the pistol grip and working the saftey, you are correct on that issue. I had the pistol grip for a short while now, and it never even came to mind about the saftey. I came home to try it, and it sucks big time, when working the saftey, you have to let go of the gun, I don't like that. Never crossed my mind when I bought it. Maybe I'll sell it to my buddy, he was talking about getting one for his. I think I might replace it with a normal speedfeed stock, or a Houge to match the fore arm. Thanks for the info.

I haven't seen one in years but there used to be a pistol grip that was available a couple of years ago that was made to combat this problem with the 500. It was angled much like the grip on a standard stock. It absorbed recoil rather well IMO when I tried it on my buddies gun. I have no idea who made it and can't remember who distibuted it. Maybe someone else could help out on this note?
