I need to find a couple of scrapped 1911 frames and slides for smithing purposes - among other things, I have some checkering files that I need to try out. Does anyone know where I can find scrap 1911 parts?
This may help you a little . There was a site where a gunsmith wrote in saying when he was working up a new pattern of checkering, that he used a piece of round steel or aluminum rod . He would use a diameter that approximated the curve of the front strap of a 1911. If in his practicing , something wasn't right he rotated the rod a quarter turn and started over. 4 tries on the same rod and you could always turn the checkering of with a lathe and use the piece of rod for something else. GOOD LUCK
These lower ends have to be destroyed if they have a number on them or if they don't. I do not think they exist. Get a gun and checker it. Do the long lines first and use the side of the vice as a guide. Then do the short lines across and after you get the lines in both ways, clean them up with a single line file. "Faint Heart never Won Fair Maiden." Needless to say you have to have the frame stripped down except for the PT. (Plunger Tube). That is the way I started and each one got better for quite a while. After about 100 of them, you should be pretty fair. Go get 'em, Chris! If you need help, call me!
Easy Stans. It'll be ok. Pistols get scrapped for all kinds of reasons. Those could be cracked, fire damaged, or whatever.
Chris, any hunk of mild steel bar stock will do to teach yourself checkering. Then go find a beat up firearm of any make to step up to harder steel.
