Everybody psyched for this release? I notice that it was set in New Jersey of all places.

Then again, it would have been a lot shorter a movie I guess if they staged it in Texas :evil: . Or even South Central LA.

I saw the trailers for the movie with people being hauled up on board the Martian tripods and thought "Gee - depending on the pocket pistol, 6-7 rounds of .380/9mmP or Mak (or 4-5 rounds of .38 spl) delivered in an alien's face might change the direction of the movie quickly :D

Should be an interesting timewaster.
 
Hey I'll give Tom Cruise the benefit of the doubt. He did excetionally well in Collateral.

I wanna see this movie, cant wait. I love SHTF movies, and the special effects looks pretty good.

I dont look into SHTF movies with a plot, just for the action. :D
 
I hate remakes with a passion. I am going to see this one JUST IN CASE it turns out to be halfway decent and because 90% of my friends arent even aware that it IS a remake, but im not expecting much.

Im still waiting for them to come out with 'updated' versions of Casablanca and Citizen Kane. i mean seriously, they would really benefic from some computer generated effects.
 
Well, they already released a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory this year :cuss: , so the film already has two marks against it...

... I would like to think that a version set in New Jersey in a time closer to the writing of the novel would have that state of which we don't speak offering more resistance, but considering how that state up and fled when Orson Wells did his radio broadcast, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I wouldn't really call this a remake. I mean, there was is a WotW book after all...

I'm very excited to see the movie. SHTF-o-rama. What caliber for weird aliens?
 
Eh, most Hollywierd celebrity's politics make me sick. But if I didn't go see a move because I disagreed with a particular actor's political viewpoints, I'd have a lot more time for shooting... :uhoh:
 
ehh, cruise. i think he's great actor, but not for this.
well, as who? trying to remember the story- as long as he isnt trying to play a tough guy. he can fake smart, but not tough.

i am a huge fan of orwell though i have read all of his stuff i think.


A GREAT VERsion- the audio moody blues war of the worlds is very good.

boy imagine the original radio broadcast disaster happening in the modern world.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

More money for ammunition, and going to the range is good for what ails you!
 
I actually feel torn.

The book, naturally, is a classic.

I feel that the original theatrical release was a movie in its own right, and a damn good one.

then you have the HORRIBLE tv series...it died a quick death....

from the looks of things, they are actually using walkers instead of the anti-grav vehicles a-la earlier version...so it will be interesting....

Might I recommend a book to read in the interim?

War of the Worlds-Global Dispatches

It contends with various persons in diffrent parts of the world dealing with the alien menace...Including a small Texas town and a somewhat younger TR while in the San Juan Hill area. :)
 
I'll check it out when it is available at the rental stores. It takes an awful lot to drag me out to the theaters.
 
Having just read a copy of the original 1898 H.G. Wells text, I can't imagine I will like this movie a whole lot. The wife wants to go see it so we will. I guess I will just go with an 'open" mind.
 
A lot of anti-Cruise missiles flying around here. The movie was mostly shot in Lexington, VA which is part my old stomping grounds and my wife's birthplace. Many friends, including my brother-in-law have met and worked with him on numerous occassions. They have nothing but glowing reports about Tom Cruise the actual person, not the actor. I won't go into a lot of details, but he gave contributions to many local charities in Lexington. He personally paid for the hospital bill of an unfortunate youngster who was very ill while Cruise was there on location. I do not know him personally, but since these reports are first hand, not of the "the waitress at the restaurant told my neighbor that a good friend met him on the street" type, I tend to believe them.

On the other hand, I was surprised to find that the same people also worked with Jodie Foster ("Sommersby" was also filmed in Lexington) and said she was nothing more than an aloof and stuck up b..... As I said, that surprised me.
 
Personally, I'd like to see a film version of the original War of The Worlds. I.e. set in Victorian England, with the defence led by the Horse Artilery, and infantry with rifles and Maxim guns, and the battle between several Martian walkers and the torpedo-ram HMS Thunderchild.


And if I remember right, there was even a scene in the book where one woman, given with the choice of either staying in England and facing the Martians, or seeking refuge in France, decided that the French would be worse :D

Then the campy Independence Day, starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Randy Quaid. (Which isn't too horrible, they could have picked a worse storyline to rip off).

Now Tom Cruise/Steven Spielburg. I'll see it, but I doubt it will be that good.

Guys, here's some (possibly) good news for you - there was ANOTHER WotW movie just made by a small studio, Pendragon Pictures, this one being set in Victorian England circa 1900. It's supposed to be 90% faithful to Wells' original book. See http://www.pendragonpictures.com/

These guys were supposed to release the film to theatres in March, but apparently it went directly to DVD. (Uh oh, not a good sign.)

Reviews at Amazon are distinctly mixed, with reviewers taking on one another. (The movie is crap! No, the movie is brilliant! No, you're a liar! No, YOU'RE a liar, you lying liar! You're a shill for the producer, trying to pump up sales! You're a troll for Spielberg, trying to trash a competitor! And so on and so on.)

I'm guessing this small movie's total budget was probably less than Tom Cruise's salary for the Spielberg WotW megapicture, so one should temper one's expectations somewhat . . . but I still plan to buy/rent the DVD just to see what a "period piece" looks like.
 
Awwww, just bag this movie...and Independence Day...and all the other wannabe films.

Instead, see the TRUE classic, Earth versus the Flying Saucers. Ray Harryhousen FOREVER! :neener:

Maybe he has grown up since he made "Topgun" on USS Enterprise. He did not make any points as an actual person then.

It is a Spielberg movie so I am expecting it not to suck, regardless of Cruise. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
