You can Untag yourself from photos on Facebook and that is FAR FAR better than quitting outright. Remember Facebook DOES NOT close out accounts they only deactivate them. Your children quitting Facebook means that now they can be tagged by people and have no recourse to go back and correct that. I would suggest keeping the accounts open and active purely as a means of image control.

That is very good advice.

I believe my children's issues came from the narcissistic addictions Facebook feeds. They wanted a break from that. I mean think about it do you really have 50 (much less 500) friends you want tot talk about your dinner last night with?

After I went about 2 weeks without going there and went back and read some posts. I immediately began to wonder why someone would want to share some of that information. Even though some of the posts were informative, much of what was there fell into that TMI category. It really gave me the creeps.

I do miss some of the illness, notices, moving notices, new jobs, etc. But the stuff I didn't need to read just outweighed it.

I plan to give it a little more time and suggest they reactivate if only to give them more control over images and such.

I don't have the technical skills to post many photos on FB, but many of my friends have posted pics of our range trips.
No black helocopters have been spotted circling my neighborhood. I think that as long as your pics don't have any threats associated with them, you'll be just fine.

I'm not worried about posting stuff about my hobbies (really any of them) regardless of how questionable they are to the general public on my FB account. That said I HAVE removed most of the pictures from said events, namely because the last thing I want is some potential significant other of being turned away. :p I'd rather tell and explain in person what my hobbies are than for them to freak out and misunderstand!

The Primary Reason anyone should be afraid of posting anything gun related on Facebook is because it exposes you to would be thieves as a potential target for firearm related stuff. Unless you go through regular "friend purges" (to remove the some 100+ people you never talked or will talk to) to clear out people with whom you care less about, it could expose you to being a potential target for theft. I have no idea what some of my classmates from high school are into now, no reason to advertise that I have x amount of guns from y manufacturers. It only takes a little bit of effort for them to find my address and break in.

Anyone remember reading the news story about the couple that posted on their Facebook that they where going on vacation overseas for a month and came back to a house that was literally ransacked? I certainly feel the same about posting certain things on FB.

Sappyg:
actually this thread made me go to FB and edit my security settings. lookin at my settings i was a little shocked to say the least. not that im paranoid but better to be safe than sorry.

This is a very good reason to go back and check on such things every once in a while. It seems every couple months when I log in, FB has changed the way the settings work, and they are not what I want them to be. So be proactive, and stay on top of things.

Considering facebook has been used many many times as an information gathering device to carry out robberies I wouldn't be loudly touting my love of firearms or posting pictures of my favorite weapons there.

This is a definate concern, ESPECIALLY never say when you leave to go somewhere, only say that you came from that place.

Type "guns" into a Photobucket field and there's tons of gun pix from everyday people...lots more "condeming" material to work with than FB I'm sure.

No offense to the OP's father but this just sounds like FUD.

Guns in your FB profile pix or public pix are probably not a very good idea however considering that it's not uncommon for employers frequently look up the people their hiring *shrug* so that might be something to consider.

"They" would need a lot more eyes and ears than "they" have available if "they" are going to watch all 80 million of us. Anyway, I say let them watch if "they" want to... I would be awful boring and uneventful to spy on.

If they aren't watching, I'm sure the Government has the capability to know what I'm doing.

The Patriot Act sees to that.

Read Dear Abby anyone? Thursday 13 Jan 2011 has a column about a teacher giving a student a character reference.

Seems the future employer looked at her "Social Network" postings. Seemed that she faked ID’s to buy alcohol, binge drinking, marijuana use, etc. Guess what, she did not get the job.

Your gun ownership, that will cause concern for future employers, don’t doubt it for one second.

The change agents want to use this, like other incidents past, as a tool for culture change - out of sight out of mind.

Remedy? PUSH BACK. Post as much about guns as you like and can. The more the better, and encourage as many people to do likewise.

Capitulate to this BS and it will be "normal" to get a "visit' or other attention when posting about guns. Push back. Don't cow to these people.

You get a "visit" or hassle from anyone over such a thing, tell them to get lost. Whatever term you would use. It is no crime, do not let them train you or others to think and accept it is.

People against Firearms makes me sick

I am soooooooo sick of these psychotic idiots on the news going nuts or a 10yr old who has had many, many mental problems in the past, the parents decide to get him a 22LR for christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

***!!! These people have NO common sense. I guess CARS are responsible for every accident on the road right, not the people. it is seriously crazy to me, to punish a WHOLE STATE as in California did after the '98 bank robbery. thats just saying " your actions dont matter, if there is 1 psycho with a gun that the GOVERNMENT let slip through,, it is all OUR faults." I am not from Cali, just speaking on behalf of them.

Read my signature. It's for you Big Brother, and exactly what they are trying to do to us (law abiding Firearm owners) right now.

:)

Take Care all my Brethrend who share the love of firearms and are NOT crazy idiots, just normal people who enjoy their GOD GIVEN 2ND AMENDMENT.

Please though ppl,, the best way for terrorist's to win is to change your life style. I sometimes can hardly see the difference these days between the 2, this is coming from someone who has served for OUR armed forces in the past too. I really was hoping I wouldn't live to see these days....

I don't use or post on Facebook simply because their privacy policies are complete crap.

Also, companies like Google, Facebook, Myspace, etc. can be subpoenaed for information on people for investigations. Now what happens if everything but muskets become illegal? No thank you.

And really, do you want to talk to those "high school friends" that you hated but are now indifferent to?

Don't post anything on the web that you wouldn't want printed on the front page of the New York Times. This may save you some future grief. Do I think it's a big deal to post about firearms on Facebook? Probably not, but it might be a really big deal for somebody else. I think it's best to keep all personal interests at a very low level on the web, it's just good personal security, simple as that.

Exactly. Here's Mike's First Rule of Electronic Communication: "Assume that every iota of information you post on or transmit through the internet will be available to every person on the planet through the end of time."

You can--and should--lock down your Facebook account to make your account accessible only to those whom you approve. But, also assume that everyone, including potential employers, can get access to anything you post.

I totally understand Mike,,plz read

First off, I do not use FB or MS, twitter bla bla its so unsafe. These kids and many adults think just because your behind a screen they can't find you. Well, there is a thing called an IP which is like your home address to your puter.

But to be afraid to show a firearm in a picture ( not talking 100's of guns or pics) is a gross violation of our 2nd amendment, which I truly believe will be gone within 120 yrs,,, if we live that long.

These are RIGHTS. Not PRIVELAGES. What part of RIGHT to bear arms to they not get?????????????

It's the only amendment they can alter because it takes equipment and production to produce firearms.

Dont get me wrong,,any violent person should never get a firearm,, but to do all these little scare tactics. It seems there is a new 1 every couple months.

It is a very scary future Ladies and gentlemen :(

Take care

Support your rights and the NRA who fight for them on your behalf!!!!!

Do not post on Facebook anything you would not post on the street corner lampost. Or stick in your resume to an employer.

Do not post here anything you would not write as a letter to the local newspaper editor.

Also, companies like Google, Facebook, Myspace, etc. can be subpoenaed for information on people for investigations. Now what happens if everything but muskets become illegal? No thank you.

You should probably stop posting here then too as I have little doubt our db could be obtained via subpoena and the information used therein to locate you in that case.

And really, do you want to talk to those "high school friends" that you hated but are now indifferent to?

Perhaps you don't realize that you don't have to be friends with anyone you don't want to on these services.

The OP has asked this thread to be closed and since it seems that most everything that can be said has been in different formats.
