I like to ask can the owner of the hand gun return the gun for warranty work (gun repair) with out going threw a FFL dealer?

Yes. Contact manufacturer for specific instructions.

You cannot do it with the postal service however. It must be a third party common carrier, like ups or fedex.

Yes you can. You may want to ask your dealer for a quote for handling the shipping. He's not bound by the same rules you are, so his costs may be a cheaper than what you'll have to pay down at UPS or FedEx.

or if you're lucky, the dealer pays shipping even. S&W sent out a fedex pickup for my pistol, on their dime.

An FFL can usually ship your gun at about half the cost - you are required to use FedEx or UPS "Instant" service, which seems to be about $90 these days.

The FFL can also (usually) provide "adult signature" service when the gun comes back, presuming that there are adults working there :D. (My favorite gun pusher's counterslave signed for a Colt for me once and put it on the shelf.... About a week later, the phone rings.... :( ) (The last go 'round of wage increases allow them to be paid in US Currency instead of sea shells or buttons....)

The only downside, besides my guy's forgetting to call me :D, is that if the gun comes back late on Friday, for example, you may not be able to pick it up for a couple days. If they don't lose it.... Getting an adult signature "at home" may be iffy, not to mention things like going out to the range or the ammo store :D.

Regards,
