Shipping a gun for repair

I know I can ship a gun through UPS to an FFL gunsmith for repair, however once the gun has been repaired does the gunsmith have to ship back to me via an FFL, or can he ship directly back to me?

Federal law`allows the direct return of a repaired or replaced firearm.
No FFL needed.

State laws may vary.

Shipped my ak to manufacturer for repair. They shipped it back to my home and courier laid it on the sidewalk outside my front door. Fortunately it was still there when I made it home from work.

As far as I know the law says that since you are the owner of the weapon you are not required to deal with a FFL unless you are selling or buying. Same goes if you are mailing it from one state to another where you are the sending and receiving party.
