I just submitted a warranty request for RIA for a very sharp spot on the trigger for the little m14y I bought for my girls. It’s sharp enough to cut a finger. Gun is brand new. We shall see how well they care for the customer on the little rifles.

In the text box I stated that the trigger has a sharp burr left on it and I requested a replacement part to be mailed to me so that I can install the part.

Why not just take a Swiss file and debur it yourself ?
Brand new gun, and it’s an obvious issue. I can fix it, but I want to give them the chance to make it right, and to retrain the bonehead that let it go like this. Cutting a finger on the trigger is not conducive to growing little people into little shooters. I expect that they remedy the problem.

good luck, and I support your inquest. While I like most here, and probably you yourself would just file it off, its never a bad idea to see what the company will do. My personal experience with them was far from positive, so I'll be watching.

Surprised they would send you a trigger to install. Just for the liability. Also most people can't even take a gun apart for a simple cleaning.

I'm hoping that they will. It's a simple install. If not then they had better find a way to make me happy. There's not a ton of info on the little rifle out there, and threads like this one pop up on the Google searches. I would hope that they will take care of the issue without issue. I will not be paying money to send a brand new rifle to be repaired, and I will not be paying money to receive the same rifle from an FFL if they decide not to simply send me a trigger that is properly deburred.

If I were to make a guess I would say that they will offer to let you send it in to them for them to fix it. As was stated by JONWILL, the liability of letting someone they don't know the mechanical inclination of install a trigger may be scary to their lawyers. Also, you've been swindled if you had to pay an FFL to receive a gun that was out for warranty work. The manufacturer can legally send it directly to your door.

Im interested to see how this plays out. A friend of mine had issues with his 10mm, dunno if he ever got that resolved.

For a couple years I have been back and forth on what 10mm I wanted to replace my Delta Elite with. On one hand there are good reports about the RIA double stack 10mms. On the other hand there are EAA witness pistols. The customer service with this $139 gun will decide the direction of a $700 purchase.

Seems like you are making a mountain out of molehill.

I expect that you are going to be unhappy with their response. American being America the bottomfeeders make it too risky to send a part that should be installed and checked by a qualified gunsmith.

Personally I would touch it up with a small file but I do not know what your mechanical abilities are. (I would probably smooth the entire front of the trigger but that is just my preference).

There are two pretty common approaches for gun manufacturers seeking to drive down costs and hit a particular retail price point:
  • Make stuff out of cheaper materials (polymer, MIM, etc.); this often requires a big up-front investment in tooling. Or
  • Do less finishing/fitting work.
From the RIA price points, I would have assumed that the parts are going to be a little rough in the areas that aren't mechanically critical. I mean, the MSRP on the rifle you're talking about is $146... IDK what the street price is, but it's almost certainly less.

Fit and finish on cheap rifles are often lacking. That being said, I hope that Armscor/RIA does you right--but as others have said, they may require you to send it to them for trigger alterations rather than absorb liability from you doing it.

Not at all. I informed them of a defect and asked for it to be fixed. If they tell me to pound sand then so be it, I never buy more of their products. If they treat me like a king then I will buy lots of their products. If things work out reasonably then they will save themselves some money on repairs and just send me the part, or offer to repair it on their dime since it’s brand new. If that happens I will buy more of their products as they interest me.

No, but I wouldn’t expect the same level of fit and finish on a Chevy as on a Mercedes.
So we agree that a sharp burr on the trigger of a youth rifle that will cut a child’s finger is not acceptable. We expect the brand new gun to be functional without major flaw. We don’t expect Ed Brown quality, or Anschutz accuracy, but I do expect the gun to be ok. Just the same as we don’t accept dented or malfunctioning chevys, we should not accept pisspoor parts on guns.

Yes this is a 2 minute fix, no it’s not a big deal, yes it more about principle than repair.

I hope I works out to the OP’s satisfaction.

But, threads like this are why I rarely bargain shop for firearms. I mean, I decide what I want and get the best bargain I can, but when you’re buying low end, hopefully good value, stuff...you get more turds than with higher end, more expensive stuff. It’s true of most goods.

$500 shoes I’ve had resoled twice and look better now than ever after 7 years. I don’t expect $50 shoes to last 7 months.

It’s also why when I buy online I’m never sure what I’m getting for fit and finish, where in a store for $15 more on a cheap 22 I wouldn’t have this worry because I could see what I’m buying.

the bargain on the gun would be lost on me at this point in the OP’s transaction.

I hope it gets resolved, they should make it right. But I wouldn’t expect it to be at the price point.

I see both sides... the gun shoulda been checked for burrs before leaving the factory and warranty should cover it ...but it’s also a simple fix that I would do myself just to save the time and hassle.

Hopefully all works out

Stay safe!
