WASR-10 Ak-47 magazine release issue/abnormality?

I recently bought a WASR-10 ak-47.

When I look at pictures of other people's WASR-10 ak's on the internet, the magazine release trigger shaped thingie between the back of the magazine and the front of the trigger guard is just sitting there out in the wide open air, easily accessible with your finger to just pull on it or whatever to release the mag.

However, for some reason my WASR-10 magazine release thing is encapsulated by this weird metal box thing that is around it, making it just about impossible to physically touch the magazine release with my finger, no matter how I squirm my fingers around it to try to get to it, it's almost like they intentionally designed it to make it literally impossible to use the magazine release.

I have literally not gotten my magazine out of my gun yet, and it has been over a week. I put it in, and now it's stuck there, I can't access the magazine release cuz of this stupid metal cover thing that is around it.

Is this normal for WASR-10's if you buy them in California? Like, is it supposed to be to make it be a non-removable magazine, cuz of some law or something, so like ever since the first time you put the magazine in, that's it, now you can never take it out?

I bought the gun at Turners, and they had boatloads of them, presumably all set up like this, so, I assume probably there must be some of you on this site who live in California like me, and have bought a WASR-10 from Turners, and know what specifically what I am talking about.

If not, I can try to take some photos of it to show what I am saying, but, hopefully at least maybe some of you know what I am asking about.

Help!

Thanks

Pics would be helpful.

I searched around and from what I can gather, you sir are boned.

The box thingy is a magazine lock. If you live in cali then you are required to have a useless, uh......i mean fixed magazine rifle.

There is a thing called a bullet block though that lets you take it out for loading. Look for a pin that looks like it was made to be pushed out with a bullet tip or punch.

Wait so... does that mean I can only shoot one bullet at a time, and have to put a new bullet in after each shot? Or, is it possible to load up the magazine, like, through the action of the gun, even though it can't be removed?

(I realize this is the type of question you would expect a 6 year old girl to ask, and not an adult, on The High Road, but, this is the first rifle I've ever owned that has a magazine, all my other rifles have been bolt action or breakbarrel, so I have no experience with magazines and this sort of stuff, so, go easy on me please, lol)

thats strange, i dont have any problems removing my WASR 10/63 high cap mag. U live in CA so your gun must have only 10 rounds in the mag, i am not sure of it but is that so?

You probably don't have a bullet button, either.

To the OP: Go back to Turners and ask them to show you how to use the "CA compliant" magazine latch.

Nalioth,

Is it already too late?

Like, is this something I would've needed them to show me how to do BEFORE I put the magazine into the gun?

And like, now that my magazine is locked in there, it's stuck there forever, with nothing I can do about it, other than just selling it and getting a new gun?

Or, is there still a way that I'll be able to actually put bullets into the magazine and use my gun?

The magazine is currently empty. When I put the mag in, I had no idea it would become "locked' in like this. Will I ever be able to put bullets into the magazine now that it's in there? What the heck is this, I don't get it

Woa dude. Calm down a second.

Look at the mag latch. Do you see a button or pin of any kind?

Did your gun come with a manual? If so read it.

You can load the mag through the receiver if all else fails. Just pop off the dust cover and pull out the spring and carrier. It would be a pain to do every thirty rounds but that's just the politicians method of getting you to vote better next election.

How did you make it out of the store before discovering this??? I've never bought a firearm...at least in peerson...without doing a basic function test.....even the most basic of functionality checks should have revealed your problem. Didn't you work the action, drop the mag, check the sights/gasblock for cant, and generally check out the gun before purchase, or did you just grab one off the rack and say "I want this?"

As stated above, you have a bullet button installed which allows you to remove your ten round magazine only with a tool. This is a left coast requirement.

You should have received “the tool” with your gun. It will be a little pick-like device with a short steel pick. You insert that pick into the hole in the bottom of your magazine lock and press until your magazine pops free. You don’t need to remove the top cover of your gun. Be patient, and double check your accessory pack. If you can’t find he pick, go back to the store. Turners is really good and they will help you out. Good luck.

PS: AK magazines lock into place with a steel wedge on the back of the magazine. Your magazine may be locked in a bit tight, so you may need to press the tool with a fair amount of force or maybe spray a light lubricant into the lock to unfreeze it.

Hey guys, sorry I tried to log in yesterday to update that I figured out how to get the magazine out (I googled "bullet button" after someone posted in here to google that, and learned what this nonsense all is lol), but the site wasn't loading.

Man... what a relief. For a second there I thought I had just wasted four benjamins on an AK that could only be used as a single-shot rifle lol.

I guess this has been a bit of an eye opener as well, that I should probably learn about my gun before I take it to the range, like maybe learn how to strip it and put it back together, just to check and make sure it's in proper firing condition before I use it for the first time.

Hopefully there are some good, slow, methodical, easy to follow vids on youtube that show how to do that

(If any of you know of really good youtube vids on how to disassemble, clean, and put back together a WASR-10 AK-47, that would be great!)
