I got my AK broke all the way down as far as it will go, short of taking the trigger assembly out, to clean the cosmo out of it. How do you take the wood off of the top handle of the piston piece? It has a piece of metal in between the metal tube and the wooden handle. Looks like a clamp of some sort. I have moved it and it doesn't seem to do anything. I have lightly tapped on the metal ring on the front side of the handle, but it won't budge. This little bastard is driving me nuts. I would like to sand and finish the wood off of the metal, but if I can't, oh well.

Assuming you're talking about the gas tube, I'd have no idea how to get it off without disassembling the gas tube in a bad way. Granted, it's been awhile since I've had my hands on an AK of any sort, and I' not an expert.

Can you refinish it as is, or is having the metal attached screwing you up somehow?

Yeah, it's the gas tube. I can do it with it on, just thought I could do a better job with it off. It's a new rifle, just trying to avoid the scratches if I could.

You mean take the gas tube off the rifle?:

(With a punch, and you are likely to destroy the wood.)

Taking the wood off of the gas tube. I figured it was a permanent attachment.

You just twist the wood around and slide it out the bottom. I wouldn't take it off though, you're very likely to crack it in half either when taking it off or putting it back on.

dont worry about breaking it when you turn it, just dont apply too much pressure, i have taken a few off of AK's and had no problem, it would be pretty hard to break it, give it a try

Grab the gas tube with pliers or wrench on the flat sides where it butts up to the rear sight block (gas tube off rifle), twist the wood 180 and slide out the bottom. The front hand guard comes off buy flipping the little lever on the furrel 180 (it points towards the butt, flip it towards the muzzle) you may have to pry the lever with a small tool, then slide the furrel foward, wiggle the hand guard foward and down, it could be tight in the reciver. The rear stock, just take out the two wood screws and pull out (maybe pry a little)

Using a monkey wrench or vice, clamp onto the REAR end of the gas tube. Next, manually rotate the wood 180* around the tube. It's difficult, but it should work. Also, as the other poster stated, it's difficult to crack the handguard.

First off I wouldnt recomend oil based stains, I should have listened to others here , but I didnt and I am going to redo the whole thing again. Some people have had luck using them, but I dont think that they work well on ak furniture.

i have allways just sanded them down real nice to bring out the natural look in the wood and stained it with a super lite stain/poly and then rubbed that down with some super super fine sandpaper, looks real nice

Also, as the other poster stated, it's difficult to crack the handguard.

I must suck, I cracked (lightly) both of mine right as they were almost completely back on lol

I used Minwax Antique Oil finish to do the furniture on mine. I just put it onto the wood without bothering with a stain. Between coats I rubbed the wood with 000 steel wool. The last coat I left alone.
