Flooded Basement
I, too, live behind the Daley Curtain, so I was, like you, the unhappy recipient of Chicago's record-setting rainstorm. I got a foot of water in my basement. Totally ruined carpeting, furniture, etc.
But no wet guns! After storing my firearms in the basement for several years, I got tired of fighting the rust that permeates Illinois' hot/cold/hot/cold humid environment. So I moved the gun safe to an upstairs closet, and took the spare guest bed that was there and stored it in the basement.
The sewer-soaked guest bed was dragged out of the basement yesterday and tossed in the alley. But my guns slept quietly through the rainstorm.
There are few dry basements in the Chicagoland area. Move your gun safe to a better location.
If you don't have room, you can keep them at my house ;-)
