as the title says, i am going to be moving within the month.
we bought a new home, and my only real concern is where am i going to put the gunsafe.
the house was built in the 20's and has a basement, however......the ceilings are LOW, and it may get damp down there at times (has a sump pump).
there is virtually NO closet space to speak of, so that is out of the question.

so my question is, if faced with a similar situation, what would you do???

i've considered placing the safe on blocks to keep it off the floor, then bolting it down from there.
there is a raised concrete slab 5 inches or so taller than the rest of the basement floor (which is also concrete), and i have considefed framing that off to not only hide the safe, but to keep damp air from circulating in there.
the only problem with that is there is a heat run that sits below the joists that i would have to work around.
(although, heat from that run might help keep the safe room "warmed up")
obviously i will install a golden rod or similar device, and also probably use a silica dessicant.....but how effective are those in basement situations???

does anyone else have a basement located safe???? what did you do?
please help!!!
lack of a "perfect" location for my safe is the only downside to this house....
thanks.

My dads safe is in his basement. He uses one of those golden rods and it works well. Of course he is in southern California so its a little dryer there. His basement still has a little dampness to it though.

Mine is in the "basement" (actually, a lower level - it sits 3' into the ground) so I mounted it on a pallet it keep it off the floor and put a large silica pack in the safe. It has been there for 5 years with no rust problems at all.

Don't use a silicia pack if you have power use a golden rod or other electric dehummidifier. Our new house does not have a basement so mine is on the first floor of the residence and no moisture problems. It is also in a no traffic area of our house.

Low ceilings are not necessarily bad.

My basement ceiling is so low my safe cannot be tumbled on its side without breaking the ceiling. I layed a ribbed polyethylene (?) sheet under the safe and use a goldenrod inside. Everything seems fine after 3 years.
