I have a stock on a Savage 99 that got wet years ago and about 6 inches on one side is black. Is that something that can be redone by an amateur with materials from the average hardware store, or do you think it would require the services of a real pro? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Qajaq59

Years ago in the paint business, I remember people using an oxalic acid and water paste on the moisture blackened areas of wood window sills and frames and allowing it to dry. The residue was then brushed off. I have not seen oxalic acid in a hardware or paint store for years. There might be a good reason for that such as toxicity or environmental issues. One of the more modern deck cleaners such as the Flood brand Dekswood might be worth a try. What ever you try, you might want to try a small inconspicuous area first. YMMV

had to remove a rust stain from a metal filing cabinet on an oak hardwood floor before moving out of a rental last fall. local ace had nothing but naval jelly.

so with nothing to loose but my security deposit  i painted it on, covered the area with plastic to keep it from drying out, and about half hour later, voila! black stain gone. :D but i did leave that wood a little "pink".

ymmv

Thanks....
I've got another old piece of scrap wood that has a similar stain. I'll see what both of those chemicals do before I try it on the stock.
And if others have any suggestions I'd be happy to hear those as well.
