Apparently, it used to be common to apply hot wax to blued guns to protect and seal the finish. It also made the gun look nice(r).

Anybody know how to do this and what kind of wax? I know it's not going to be a spray wax, because the damp carriers would cause rust.

Hot gun parts and solid wax? Melted wax and a brush?

Help!

I used to apply wax to my skis with an iron. Irons shouldn't get hot enough to change the tempering of the metal.

This said, I don' t think that you need to go thru the trouble of hot wax as modern quality paste waxes formulated to protect your car from the hot sun and extreme elements are easily applied by hand & soft cloth. Rub on and buff.

I personally prefer Renaissance Wax, which is museum wax formulated to protect art pieces like armor, swords, knives, guns and silver from corrosion and tarnishing. Also good would be Tetra gun wax.

CWL is right. Forget about any "hot wax" process and simply use a good automobile paste wax (not polish). Also avoid wax that has an abrasive component in it. If areas of the gun are bead-blasted, checkered or matt finished polish with an old toothbrush if necessary.

Ah, I had though a little heat would be necessary to get the wax into the pours and displace the oil.

The Renaissance Wax really sounds like the ticket. Where does one find that?

And thanks, guys.

what about a wax you'd want to "grip" and imbed into parkerizing?

I'd expect a car-style paste wax would leave white crud everywhere in the pores of the parkerizing.

Would the Tetra work better?

I too use Ren. Wax on non-stainless guns that get exposed to the elements. You can find it at knife shops, among other places. A little goes a long way. It's expensive, but a can lasts.

Andrew:

Use a soft scrub brush and follow with a course-weave cloth on Parkerizing. Be aware that it will end up with a glossy look.

Do a search and you'll find a number of places that stock it. I found mine at a local "high dollar" wood finish supply place,
