Maybe I'm behind (as usual),but I got some Winchester white box "7.62" (Q3130) marked wcc 09. It does not have crimped in primers, at leasts not the ones I have primed so far. I was contemplating which tool to buy in order to remove the crimp, since everything I read says that all military ammo is crimped. More confusion for us newbs. I guess since Win is going commercial with this round, they are omitting the crimp?
Just thought this info might be of interest.

You'll find lots of military ammo without a crimp.

I guess since Win is going commercial with this round, they are omitting the crimp?
Don't quite understand this, as .308 Winchester has been available commercially since the late '50's.

Yes "Fleet" , but this is not ".308".(it is .308 diameter, which is really 7.82mm)
It's marked as 7.62mm. It's the same as the M80 load which they have been making for the military for some time. I don't understand this, and a whole lot of other things about this reloading business, but I'm learning. Trouble is, if I don't write it down, I'll forget it in about 30 seconds,,And if I write it down, I'll forget where I wrote it !

White box is not military ammo. It may look like it, and for the most part perform like it, and even be made from military components, but it will not usually have crimped primers for the most part or sealant on the neck.

Almost all current military ammo has crimped and sealed primers, mainly for reliability in full auto weapons. Even so, some contract lots may vary due to end user requirements.

Pardon my confusion,, The box is marked 7.62mm, the headstamp is wcc09 with the NATO circled cross, the case is noticeably heavier than commercial, the case neck is annealed, the primer is sealed and even has a tiny ring around it that looks almost like a crimp(fooled me). I'm sure the military doesn't buy it in a white box, but it sure isn't "normal" commercial ammo.
Thanks for the info,, I'm still learning. All I know is what I've been reading on these forums for the past month or so. Appreciate all the help I can get. I've made it 65 years, and I don't want to blow myself up now. :)

I saw a lot of WCC 7.62 from the 60's and 70's that was not crimped and accepted new primers with no problem. I used to pick it up when we went to camp and fired the Miniguns on the Huey's. All the tracers which were Lake City were heavily crimped.

but this is not ".308".(it is .308 diameter, which is really 7.82mm)

This often confuses. The 308win and 7.62x51mm both use .308"(7.82mm) dia bullets, whilst the bore is actually .300"(7.62mm) dia between the lands,
and the groove dia is .308"(7.82mm).
Just what they decided to name the calibre, from the bullet/groove dia or bore dia.
