Weak points of Maverick 88?

What are the weak points of the Maverick 88 shotgun?

Can they be upgraded with parts from the Model 500?

About the only real difference is a cheaper stock and a cross-bolt safety.

You can change the stock.

But you can't change the safety to the 500 type tang safety.

I may be mistaken , but isn't the maverick‘s forearm only attached by one rail instead of two.

It has to forearm rails but I don't like how they attach to the forearm.

The forestock is riveted as an integral piece with the action tube assembly. So no aftermarket unless you get a new tube.

They seem to be pretty solid guns, all things considered.

The only real weak point IMHO is the magazine tube. I prefer a magazine cap that gives access to the tube instead of a barrel nut that just retains the barrel.

Even that's not a serious drawback unless you use the gun really hard. You can unscrew the magazine tube from the receiver if you need to clean it, change a magazine spring etc. Upgrade? Just buy a 590 to start with... .

The Model 835 has the magazine cap like the 590.

The magazine tube problem is endemic to all Mossber 500 shotguns as well. Only the Mossberg 590 series have conventional magazine caps for ease of magazine tube cleaning.
