Hello, first post here so I thought I'd make it a long one, heh..

My dad passed away semi-recently and has left me with quite a few weapons that he owned. Of course I grew up around them, shot them semi-regularly with him as a teenager, but that's been quite some time ago.

I've ended up with the following: Excel 20 Gauge shotgun, Winchester model 67-22 short bolt action rifle, JJ Higgins model 31 made for Sears & Roebuck, Marlin model 30AW 30/30 which is the newest gun he had, and a S&W .38 revolver model 15-3.

In particular I'm looking for value information (i.e. do I need to insure these things for more than my regular homeowners would cover). I know the Excel and the Winchester, from what the family has told me, are quite old.

Essentially I'm looking for whatever info I can find about these guns so I know more about what I actually have.

Also, the Excel shotgun has the front stock piece missing, should I look into repairing/replacing it? Thanks for any info guys/gals.

Richard

Hello - Welcome to the forum.

I will try to give you a rough idea of the values - you might also try looking on a web siter called Gunbroker. It is an auction site for guns and there you can get a picture of what your models may be selloing for - or what they are asking for them.

The excell is a single shot shotgun made in large qty and generaly sold through catalog order in the early 1900's. It value is less than $100 .

The Winchester 67 bolt action .22 draws collector interest if in high grade but not so much if well used. $150 to $200 is likely the average value.

The JC Higgens guns were made by various arms manufactures - I would have to look up the model 31 - what type gun is it ?

The Marlin 30A is a nice firearm and valued somewhere around $300 depending on condition.

The S&W model 15's have a good market and again depending on condition the average one is in the $350 range today.

Hope this helps a little. As you can see - nothing of high value , just good working guns.

Hey thanks for the info. At least I know I don't need to ring up the insurance agent. These have sentimental value and will not be leaving the family but wanted to make sure I didn't need to take some extra care with them.

I took the .38 revolver out to the shooting range yesterday along with my new taurus pt 145 Mil pro, still as accurate as ever. Can't say that about the taurus, heh, but I'm not used to a semi auto so maybe it's just me needing to get used to it.

To answer your question the JC Higgins is a 22 rifle with a pull out shoulder strap in the butt of the gun.

Thanks so much for the info!

If you were to post a thread in the "Rifle Country" subforum I'm pretty sure someone could give you some information on that gun (the JC Higgins). I seem to remember someone posting about them a while back.

The JC Higgins Model 31 is a semi-auto, tube fed 22 rifle. It will shoot shorts, longs, and long rifle cartridges. It has an internal sling that pulls out of the buttstock and hooks on about 5 inches below the muzzle. It's not a real great sling (tight, fragile feeling), but it is kinda a cool idea. I have one that was my grandfather's, and it is accurate. Very well-built little rifle. I had some of my senior pictures taken with it. Here is a link to the JC Higgins Owners Club thread. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=258415
