CNN) -- Two men tried to re-enter Canada from the United States early Saturday with handguns and ammunition strapped to their bodies, Canadian police said.

Ali Dirie, 22, and Yasin Mohamed, 23 -- both Canadians from the Toronto area -- face weapons-related charges and are in police custody in Niagara Falls, Ontario, according to a police statement. Ontario's Provincial Weapons Enforcement Team and the Niagara Regional Police Service are investigating.

Detective Sgt. Shawn Clarkson, of the Niagara Regional Police Service, would not say what led border officers to search the men.

The men's vehicle underwent a routine search at about 5:40 a.m. at Peace Bridge, which links Buffalo, New York, with Fort Erie, Ontario.

Smuggling U.S. guns into Canada, where gun restrictions are much tighter, has been a common problem.

Niagara Regional Police Chief Wendy Southall said the arrests demonstrate "how many enforcement agencies working together contribute to the safety of communities beyond any local jurisdiction."

"Border security and the flow of illegal guns into Canada affect us all," she said.

Toronto's socialist mayor and Ontario's left-leaning Liberal Premier blame the USA's alleged lax gun laws for all the street gangs' recent deadly shootouts in what used to be known as 'Toronto the Good'. Never mind mollycoddling criminals by leftist policymakers, judges, parole boards, immigration authorities, or taxpayer subsidized giveaways, etc. Lenient sentencing, no capital punishment, wasting a billion taxpayer dollars on a useless gun registry (but Ali and Mohammed intended to register their guns as soon as they got to Toronto, right?), and certainly no 'profiling' of those favored by progressives, couldn't have anything to do with it, could it? (sarcasm off)

The fact that they even searched these guys was pretty risque in light of their normal attitudes.

Hopefully, they may be starting to wake up?

Why on earth would they come to the US to buy $400-600 handguns when they can purchase Norinco 1911 and P226 clones for $250 there in Canada?

Maybe they read and actually believed the brady/vpc propaganda.

I have no doubt a bunch of laws were violated. The guns may have come from the black market, which is larger in the U.S. than in Canada. Even so, it would be interesting to know how the guns were acquired. It is not that easy to go into a strange city in a strange country and tap into the illegal gun market. (Would you know how?)

I suspect they had some help; the guns could have been bought by U.S. citizens or residents who are part of the Islamic criminal/terrorist network. I hope BATFE uses their vaunted trace capabillity; they might turn up something interesting. But they probably won't, any more than the FBI took action on reports of guys taking flying lessons but skipping the landing part.

Like Jim says, I'm curious to learn how the guns were acquired. I also suspect that they're black market. Now, is there an Al Qaeda link somewhere or am I just being paranoid?

Weapons

If there is a terrorist connection your guys will probably get them back down there. They violated US laws against non-resident aliens buying guns and also exporting firearms without a permit.Probably enough to extradite. They'll get the same charges here so extradition would be mean that they are something special.

No thank you Glenn. The Canadians can keep them forever. Really.

Hey, they'd heard about the American 'gun culture' and were just trying to fit in.
