Canada to arm border guards along U.S. border

TORONTO, Canada (AP) -- Canada will arm its border guards starting in 2007, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday.

Canada has unarmed guards along its 4,000-mile (6,435-kilometer) border with the United States, but Canada's will now be armed, as their U.S. counterparts are.

The government plans to arm and train its 4,500 border agents over the next 10 years. Harper said some will be armed starting in September 2007 and about 150 will receive guns by the end of March 2008.

The Canadian side of the U.S.-Canada border is monitored by the Canada Border Services Agency. They have been demanding guns to help them deal with cross-border criminal activity.

Officers abandoned their posts in British Columbia earlier this year when they were told that two murder suspects from California were headed their way, in an embarrassment to the former Liberal government. The men were apprehended by armed U.S. law enforcement officers.

Canada's Conservative party defeated the Liberals in elections last January and promised that they expected to arm border guards soon.

Harper also reiterated Wednesday that $101 million Canadian ($81 million U.S.) will be spent to hire 400 additional officers. They will be used, among other things, to double up on Canada-U.S. border crossings that only have a single officer on duty.

"Arming CBSA officers and eliminating situations where these officers work alone will allow them to do their job better and more effectively," Harper said in a statement.

I'm from Montreal and the cops here carry p99's and Personally I think its too much gun for them and a waste of money.... they should have just kept their old revolvers. Now to border guards.... what's the point? in case they encounter a rawdy turist? LOL

now seriously.... In my honest opinion, I don't see a point to arm them..... but to answer your question... probably p99 or a glock......

RCMP/SIGarms DAK R P-226

What is the standard issue for the RCMP; Royal Canadian Mounted Police? I think they use S&W .40 4046s or the SIGarms P-226 9mm.

If it's the SIG, I'd say they would go with the SIGarms DAK-R model P-229/P-226 pistols, :D .

It's big with the US Dept of Homeland Security.

i could make a joke about not needing guns when the americans are closer there than anyother place. but the joke also works as needing guns cause us americans are that close... oh well.

sigs would be real nice. revolvers would be an interesting change of pace

Rumors

I've read here that there are rumored to be very large stocks of Inglis Hi-Powers in Canadian Mil/Govt warehouses. If the rumors are true wouldn't it be fiscally rsponsible to pull them out of the mothballs to arm the border guards? Oh wait, those are single action semi autos, not many US LE agencies carry them, much less a Canadian one - way too lawyer risky in the PC environment both here and there.

You'll shoot your eye out

Maybe a few Daisey Red Riders? Might be too powerful on second thought.

They may want to consider buying from Canadian based companies:

Para-Ordnance (Scarborough, Ontario) sidearms

Diemaco (Kitchener Ontario) rifles...

Ammunition SNC Industrial Technologies Inc (Le Gardeur, Quebec)

S&W automatics are popular, my wife's uncle carried one (RCMP)

Some Agencies carry Glock sidearms, Fish and Game (Dept. of Environment IIRC)

 Never know what they'll end up with... Hope it's the top 3 I posted though.

I could never grasp the concept of having a guard that's not armed for anything.
Stop or I'll, I'll, well stop please. Pretty please. I'll give you a lolly pop.

It makes as much sense as trying to teach a cinder block to swim.

Definitly a Red Ryder BB GUn, They can put your eye out at 200 yrds with one.:what: :what:

HEAVY ARTILLERY

I haven't heard what they'll carry as sidearms, but I have seen a photo of one of their big field pieces - which I understand are installed all along the border in the more wilderness areas.

On the OTHER side of the border, we'll have our new TANKS WITH SILENCERS intrenched everywhere. 45Broomhandle

I never noticed that they didn't have them already. I guess they are always in their little "toll booth" thing so I couldn't tell. I would think Glock or Sig but it sounds like they are apprehensive even to arm law enforcement and might go with S&W b/c of all their "safety features", so I would guess a SW99 type or a more traditional S&W auto.
