I need some help from some of you ballistics experts out there. I'm sighting in a Weatherby 300 for a Red Stag Hunt in Argentina in a few weeks. Starting with factory ammo. With the following load this is what I'm getting (note: 24" barrel, Redfield 3x9 widefield scope, lead sled rest, no wind)

150 grain, Factory Weatherby Spire Point bullet

100 yards, group just under 1 1/2" at 3" over point of aim
200 yards, group just under 2 1/2" at 5" over point of aim
300 yards, group just under 3" and dead on point of aim

I would have suspected a slight drop at 200 yards, not an increase. The 200 yard target on the range was not level with the 100 or 300 targets, probably 5' lower.

I would have suspected about 6" drop at 300 yards but it's dead on

Opinions, advice? Let well enough alone and just shoot it?

180 grain Weatherby X does not group well at all.

If I had time and patience I would try to work up a load but have neither right now.

Thanks for any help. Tom Held

I'd say you're sighted a bit high - it's still rising @ 200. Decide the max height you want it over LOS at any range and use a point blank ballistics program to determine POI at any given range. You will need MV and BC for this. Just guessing, lower it a bit at 100, to around 2.25", or maybe just bring the 200 down to around 3".
