Weatherby rifle--is it really worth $1600?

First of all, buy what YOU really want! Save until you can get it!

Secondly, you can't buy two rifles and swap bbls without a gunsmith doing the work for you. With that added cost, and the loss you will take on the extra gun, i don't think you will save a lot of money over buying what you want new in the first place.

It would take more time, but you could buy a used 700 Rem. in 7mm Rem. mag., and have it re-bbled in 257 Wby., but i don't know why? A 7mm Rem. mag., using a good quality 120 grain bullet will have similar recoil to the 257 wby., and kill deer just as fast or faster! PLUS, with heavier bullets the 7mm will take anything that walks north America!

I already have two other rifles in 257 and a whole slew of brass. Plus, the 7 rem mag has <0 appeal to me.

What I want is an accurate left handed 257 Weatherby hunting rifle. The cartridge has to be a Weatherby but the rifle does not. I can rebarrel an existing lefty Savage I already own with a Shilen stainless barrel for <$400 so I think that's the route I just might end up taking. Then if I don't like it I can always sell the barrel and buy the genuine article. I suspect a Shilen barrel is probably just as accurate as the ones Weatherby is putting on their production rifles.

Most likely a Shilen will be as good, or better then a wby barrel. Ive shot a couple VERY nice Wbys, both accumarks. For me they arnt worth the cost, but if i ever have a crap load of cash to waste ill likely want a "real" top end .300WBY...

They are good rifles but only as good as the shooter behind it. If you like the looks of it then it's worth as much as any other premium rifle but there is no magic engineering in them... my father has a lasermark and the engraving on the stock is nice but it doesn't shoot any better than my Remington.

That's a good reason to stay with the 257... I'm betting a Savage/Shilen will out shoot a Weatherby every time, IF you do your part and you get the bedding right...

Don't over look the Vangaurd series 2, you can get that in .257Weatherby. I have been hearing great things about these and they have a Sub-Moa garuantee. Not sure if they make it in a lefty thought.

I have a 257 Vanguard. They don't make them in left hand and they only offer it with a 24" barrel.
