I want to change the lousy TC Gorilla grip rings that are on my muzzleloader out. Now I am normally a fan if Weaver style bases but Weaver only makes an aluminum base for this gun. Warne doea make a steel one but there seem to be a lot of issues being reported with it. So that leaves the aluminum Weaver or a steel Leupold style. Which would you choose? Do the aluminum Weaver bases hold up?

I have had weaver bases on some hard Hitting guns for years wit no trouble but you can allways find some stronger . Just don't see its needed. The week spot is allways the screws and those can be up graded just don't over torque and use red lock tight on them. Guess my muzzle loader has had weaver base and old school weaver steel and aluminum rings now for around 14 years.

I'm also using a Weaver quad mount grip on a 45-70 which I also shoot black powder up to modern lever guns with. I've never had a problem with the scope moving or losing its settings.

Aluminum bases are strong enough for anything you can shoulder fire. Don't think that you need steel.

i always suggest DNZ Products mounts if they make one for the firearm
I'm not sure if they make one or not, but I really want to use Burris Signature Zee rings. I use them on the large majority of my guns and I really like them. That's why I either need a Weaver or Leupold style base.

Thanks for the opinions so far guys. Looks like I will go with the Weaver base.

Strong enough is just that STRONG enough.
Aluminum is strong enough.
Why add weight that does not help you?

So? It's a scope base, not a receiver. Aluminum is plenty strong so long as you do your part and make sure everything it torqued down properly. I have aluminum bases on many guns, including some with substantial recoil & heavy scopes (Remington M673 .350 Rem. Mag. w/ATN Mk 390 NVRS that weighs over 3 lbs)

I've had Weaver with Quadlock rings on two of my guns. First is a Remington 7400 in 280 Rem. Put the Quadlock's on because of the semi-auto action bolt slamming back after firing. The other is a Marlin 375 in .375 Winchester, that's a hard kicking little levergun carbine with a 20" barrel. Never had a problem with either one. I also have Leupold standard bases & rings on my 8mm mauser which is not that severe of recoil (less than an 06) and they do just fine also. I am going with the same set-up on my 7mm Spanish mauser. I hear Conetrol makes some pretty good rings & mounts (pricey though).
