Weaver bases vs. dovetail

In my quest to find a sturdy scope set-up for my Win. Model 70 in .308 I'm at a fork in the road. I find tons of Weaver-style bases/rings, but wonder about their reliability. My concern is that the screws holding the rings to the bases will loosen. The Leupold dual dovetail mount appears to rectify this problem.

Are my concerns justified, or will a Weaver-style base/ring be just fine for the next couple of decades?

the lower the scope, the better. if you have plenty of friction point doing the dovetail way, do that. otherwise, the weaver mounts , especially with a drop of loctite, will be fine.

After using both styles for years, I would rate the Weaver considerably stronger than the more elegant dovetail mount. The recoil force is taken by the slots in the base, combined with the ease of removal and return to zero, no contest.

I believe that you will find that modern "Weaver" style bases will hold the scope tighter than the dovetail type.

Try looking up "Picatinny" bases instead of Weaver.

Picatinny bases, which are really nothing more than milspec weaver bases, are used on nearly all the tactical/sniper rifles in use today. Your fears are unfounded.

I will admit to using both, I believe the Weaver/Picatinney design is better albeit not as elegant.

I have Warne Weaver-style bases with Warne QD rings, and they are nothing short of excellent. I can pop my scope off, put it back on, and it will be dead-on.

Also, I agree about "as low as possible" for a few reasons.

Most of my center fire rifles are fitted with Weaver mounts. A few of my guns are heavy kickers. Have never had a mount break loose from the gun or a scope come loose from the mounts. The beauty of Weaver mounts is that you can have an extra zeroed in scope with rings as a backup if your scope fails on a hunt.

Probably way longer then that.

I put Weaver rings & bases on my first 30-06 in 1962.
They haven't moved yet!

But get the real thing.

There are a ton of Chinese copy Weaver style rings now that aren't worth a damn.

Leapers rings????

I have an AR that I want to mount a 30mm. 6.5-20 cabelas scope to. I find leapers rings are inexpensive, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with their rings. I've run out of funds, and was wondering if I can get away with these rings.

The problem with weaver bases is nowdays if you don't shell out at least $40 for rings you're buying absolute CRAP!
