Weaver/Picatinny Compatibility?

I suspect this is a bit of info that's readily available, but my google-fu is weak and I'd rather ask a silly question than make a silly mistake:

Can a sight with weaver-style mounts be fitted to a picatinny rail? I'm shopping around for some sighting systems for a Sig 522, and I want to be sure I'm not considering incompatible devices.

Also, any and all advice regarding sights for the 522 would be welcome. I'm thinking red dot, scope or both.

Right, that's one of the first things I looked at, but a couple things confused me:

...a bracket used on some firearms in order to provide a standardized mounting platform. A similar system is the Weaver rail mount.

So it's similar, but...

Some accessories are designed to fit on both Weaver and Picatinny rails; but most Picatinny devices will not fit on Weaver rails.

So does that imply that Weaver devices will categorically fit on Picatinny rails? I hope it does, and I've been including Weaver devices in my growing list of things to check out, but if I'm wrong, I'll be wasting some time (and perhaps some money) barking up the wrong tree.

And of course, now that I went ahead and looked up Weaver rails, I see this:

Weaver devices will fit on Picatinny rails, but Picatinny devices will not always fit on Weaver rails.
