I found a Webley MkIV at a local pawn shop for $229 plus tax. As far as I can tell it's a 90-95% war finish gun. The grips are non original white plastic but fit well. The cylinder has some rotational play when the trigger is stationary. Locks up tight when the trigger is held back. Is this normal?

Is it a good deal? Does someone sell original like grips?

Thanks

That is a good deal. A Webley MkIV is hard to find. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webley_Revolver

You will have problems finding grips and parts. (I have been looking for a .455 Webley cylinder for years). You just have to look for stuff. A lot of grips were changed out, good luck.

I hope yours is in the original .455 Webley. Mine was converted to 45 Auto Rim. It was a very poorly done. Probably done in the 50's by the importer.

Something I will relate, the Webley is not meant to take powerful loads. I tried a cylinder full of Elmer Keith loads and found the backstrap was bent!. This pistol was meant to be used with soft lead bullets, around 255 grs, and low velocities, around 550-600 fps.

This is a very intelligently designed combat pistol. It was meant to point and shoot at realistic combat distances. The sights are excellent for a WWI period pistol. Easy to pick up and put on target.

Look at the cylinder - right along the outside edge, on the breech side - and see if you can find a serial number. If you can, that means the cylinder is in the original .455 caliber and has not been cut to fit .45 acp. That's good.

Extra credit if the numbers match, of course.

Be aware that .445 ammo can be hard to find and is expensive when you find it.

Hornady loads 455 that is reasonable in price and shoots very well.
