I've read several threads lately about ammo storage as well as discussions about how many rounds one should have reserved for each firearm in case of a SHTF scenario. With those threads in mind, I decided to drag out the ammo I had bought and thrown under the bed over the last few years, catalogue what I had, and place everything in clear plastic containers that I could then replace under the bed for convenient storage.
It turns out that I have 4500+ rounds of 7.62x39 of various animal types (Wolf, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Grey Goose , etc.). Since I've read several people recommend having a thousand rounds on hand for each firearm, this constitutes a problem: I only have two guns that shoot this caliber, an SAR-1 and a Yugo SKS. I suppose I'll have to buy at least two more weapons in this caliber!
Having unpacked all of these rounds from the cardboard boxes they had shipped in and reloaded them and about a thousand rounds of .30 carbine, .45, etc. in a long plastic container I had bought at Target to help me fit all of this under the bed, I realized that I could hardly budge the container, much less slide it under the bed. And if I did manage to get it under the bed, it would be even more difficult to get it out from there. And I hadn't even been able to put all of my handgun ammo in the container. Ammo is HEAVY!
So I guess I'll have to go find some smaller containers to fit everything under the bed without giving myself a hernia!
My cases of 7.62.51 and .30-06 are still in their original packing, located at various places in my closet and around the bedroom since I don't want to much weight in any one place on a second-story floor.
