I've read several threads lately about ammo storage as well as discussions about how many rounds one should have reserved for each firearm in case of a SHTF scenario. With those threads in mind, I decided to drag out the ammo I had bought and thrown under the bed over the last few years, catalogue what I had, and place everything in clear plastic containers that I could then replace under the bed for convenient storage.

It turns out that I have 4500+ rounds of 7.62x39 of various animal types (Wolf, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Grey Goose ;), etc.). Since I've read several people recommend having a thousand rounds on hand for each firearm, this constitutes a problem: I only have two guns that shoot this caliber, an SAR-1 and a Yugo SKS. I suppose I'll have to buy at least two more weapons in this caliber!

Having unpacked all of these rounds from the cardboard boxes they had shipped in and reloaded them and about a thousand rounds of .30 carbine, .45, etc. in a long plastic container I had bought at Target to help me fit all of this under the bed, I realized that I could hardly budge the container, much less slide it under the bed. And if I did manage to get it under the bed, it would be even more difficult to get it out from there. And I hadn't even been able to put all of my handgun ammo in the container. Ammo is HEAVY!

So I guess I'll have to go find some smaller containers to fit everything under the bed without giving myself a hernia! :scrutiny:

My cases of 7.62.51 and .30-06 are still in their original packing, located at various places in my closet and around the bedroom since I don't want to much weight in any one place on a second-story floor.

If SHTF, that's all way too much ammo to try to run with.
Instead of filling up the bedroom, take it to the range and fill up the backstop.
Use a bunch of it up practicing and then you probably won't need so much in reserve. You'll be good.
And you'll probably sleep better without all that stuff under the bed.
Just a thought or two.

Get a bunch of the leather stripper-clip carriers from a surplus place and keep four of each on hand filled. This will be your go-ammo. In a rush, slap on the web belt and go. Also, put that ammo back in the 50cal cans it belongs in :D. 50cal cans can hold a lot, store nicely, and are dimentioned to haul the most ammo in a movable weight. Not to mention that 50cal cans are cheap. If you've got time to evac, the cans can be moved easily.

You do have way too much in one caliber for any normal lifetime.:D
I'll be very happy to take the Grey Goose loads off your hands.Just PM me to make arrangements for immediate delivery.
My Yugo 59 SKS ammo is running a little low right now.

Definitely consider geting some .30 cal. and .50 cal. ammo cans for all your storage needs. That's what they were designed to do, are well sealed to keep out moisture, are rugged enough to take abuse, stack nicely, and are quite handy and portable. Just label the outside of each can so you know what's in there, and store it in a safe, dry area of your home.

Yep, I already knew that. But not to worry, that's just my stash for if I bug IN. Rest assured that if I need to bug OUT, I have ammo that is ready to go and limited to the guns I will be taking with me.

Thanks for your concern for my range time, but I'm pretty sure I get enough practice as it is. ;) Regardless of anyone's proficiency, I doubt there is such a thing as too much ammo, however. Advice like this is akin to saying don't worry about keeping extra batteries around during hurricane season, go ahead and use them all up now. Besides, with the price of ammo going up the way it is, I think it is fairly wise to have a reserve cushion.

Definitely consider geting some .30 cal. and .50 cal. ammo cans for all your storage needs.

Yes, that's a good idea, and one I intend to implement as soon as I can find some in good shape. The ones at the local surplus store, however, are not in very good shape and I need to locate some better ones.

I don't think I'll give it away, but I do try to be hospitable and share what I can. Let me know when you're in the area and can drop by and knock some back!

Nice find! I found 1k .40 Gold Dots a week or three ago in the back of a closet. It was a nice surprise. :)

I just ordered 10 .50 cal cans from armygear.net thanks to a post here recently. At $6.70/can shipped, it was a pretty good deal.

Thank you for that hospitable invite,Seminole!
I'll be at my second home in Blowing Rock,NC in November. What's 475 miles for some Grey Goose and friendly gun talk?
All things are possible.:)

I gun store all my ammo on a 6' or so wooden bookshelf that I commondeered out of my livingroom (wife wasnt real happy, but I bought her and the kid 2 smaller ones for thier junk) in my spare room. Keeps it all nice and organized and easy to find exactly what I want, immediately, sorted by caliber, then brand and bullet weight/type, etc. Great for inventory time, and to quickly see what I may be getting low on. YMMV.

You guys pay for your ammo cans :p I guess thats one of the perks. The .50 cal cans are hard to get a hold of, but the 5.56 and 7.62 cans are plentiful. What I really need to get, and are hard to find for free, are the frag grenade crates. They hold up better and hold more if you intend for the contents to stay put.

I just wish I could buy ammo itself from supply...oh well.

PS: I might just get some of those PLANO cans for my dad's b-day...good find!
