Went p-dog shooting this past weekend, so thought I should share it with my fellow varminters. On Friday my brother and I went to my favorite spots in NW Kansas. There have been others shooting there so the dogs were warier than usual, which made many of our shots longer than usual with lots of them being 200+.
The longest shot was 330 yds with my Rem 700 VSF .223. It was a bit windy and I missed the first 4 shots at this particular dog. The 5th shot, I held several inches high and as many left, allowing for bullet drop and wind, the bullet found it's mark.
We both mostly shot .223, with me shooting 40 gr Nosler and brother shooting 50 gr molys. Alas, my big brother is a better shot than I am with his Rem 700 VLS .223. Late on the 3rd day, we found a large section that has been poisoned in the past, but has rebounded. So, it was populated with juveniles that were a bit less wary.
My Anschutz .17HMR really performed well in that spot and I surpassed big brother in the number of dogs taken. Heated the barrel for about 30 minutes of shooting. The only bad news is we ran on to that productive spot about the time were planning to stop shooting dogs and get out the shotguns for doves. And there were lots of doves...another trip?? Altogether we killed around 275 dogs.
I spent this morning cleaning rifles and dust out of everything else. They haven't had rain in months and the drought seems to harm everything except p-dogs and doves.
