Just sharing: shot prairie dogs this past weekend in western Kansas. Did find that my favorite town had not been shot since spring. My buddy and I killed around 240+ dogs with .223, .204, 22 Hornet, and 17 HMR. Best shoot I've had in awhile. The rancher plans to poison next month so I'm rapidly running out of targets.....(sigh). Oh well....I've been going to that area for the last 10-12 years, so I've had a good run...a very good run. Spent a lot of time and money. Good times.

thats alot of shooting! pdog popping is one of those things ive really wanted to do but never gotten the chance....not alot of call for it here lol.

Too bad they are going to poison.

Congratulations on the successes! We've had prairie dog town problems for almost 10 years, they've survived (or moved in from neighboring towns) multiple poisonings and many shooting sprees but only one town shows much activity anymore as the plague has done serious damage around here. So don't give up hope, they just may be back!

After some sniper training in north Texas (when I was in the army) we spent the last day popping p-dogs. The SR-25's, MK13's, and previous week of practice made it very interesting. Almost unfair.

It was not uncommon to shoot 800-1000 prairie dogs in 4 days in Montana a few years ago, then the tribes and ranchers started putting out poison and the dog populations dropped like a lead balloon. I really miss those days :(

Used to have a ball shooting the p-dogs out near Seligman, Arizona, In fact had a good friend that owned a lot of land out there, and the p-dog population was getting out of control. Unfortunately my friend left the area and moved back east and sold the property, and so far I haven't been able to make contact with him, as far as gaining hunting rights.

"...The rancher plans to poison..." That legal? Just curious. Get him arrested, up here. Don't think it'll do much either though. Ground squirrels and ground hogs are alike that way. Prolific breeders is being polite. Shoot 'em all, or think you did and they'll be back in the Spring.

It's not only legal, it's mandated by the local township. In one location, Logan County Kansas, a rancher sued the township, refusing to poison and won. That ruling is being appealed. You might think the rancher a hero, but his neighbors would say otherwise. His very large ranch with it's huge population of prairie dogs repopulates the neighbors after they spend lots of money eradicating them. I don't like him because he won't let me shoot them!!~ Here's another odd twist. Even though the prairie dogs are ruled to be a nuisance and worthy of destruction, there is only a certain time of year that is legal/mandated for poison. This seems to be the case because the approved poison can be harmful to other species at certain times of the year....go figure.

If you can get past the flea's which carry plague I guess they probably aren't bad.
Never heard of anyone eating one but the same goes for mice or rats.

What's smooth flavor? Like Crown Royal?

They're pretty smooth after being hit with 125g .308. Kinda purred like a PDog smoothie.

I could kill 100+ out the window of my hotel room in Billings right now. I wonder if Hamptons have a "no hunting from rooms" policy?

The buzzards, coyotes, coons, possums, hawks, foxes, and other cannibalistic prairie dogs find them very tasty.

Traveling across Kansas once I kept seeing signs advertising the world's biggest prairie dog. When I got there to see him I figured it would take some real penetration to get a bullet through it....it was made of concrete!
Just Kansas humor I guess...
The guy had a pretty good sized prairie dog town out back of the place and a big pit of rattlesnakes inside. He basically raised the prairie dogs as food for the snakes. I asked him how he knew which snakes had eaten and which hadn't, to which he just replied "lumps". Not a real talkative guy.......
