Weird encounter while walking the dog today

Oh Yeah,

and to the original poster, maybe you could have handled it better (I would have done everything the same way), but think about how many people out there might never have even given the approaching car a second thought?

The very fact that you recognized the potential for trouble means you are doing a lot of things correctly.

Hey guys thanks for reading!, Well, im not sure what they were doing but I am glad that they didn't pull anything. I forgot to include that I was acctually carrying my mag light, I usually shine it on the ground to let incoming cars know that i'm walking. I end up using it a lot, because my dog is a lab and its hard to see her in the dark, and besides that shes just a puppy so she has to smell everything...Grr. Only thing about the mag is its bulky, but that works both ways, its big so you can bash stuff if need be but really big and doesn't fit in my pocket. But yeah, I don't know how I could of handled the situation better but I'm glad I was paying attention to my surroundings! I might invest in a better flashlight so I can put it in my pocket if I needed to use both hands for whatever reason.
did you get their license no.? Even if you didn't, you should call your local police's non-emergency number and tell them you've seen suspicious activity at night time and tell them the exact streets and they may send an extra squad car to patrol the area every now and then.

as long as you had your cellphone and CCW on you, i don't blame your response. heck any normal and prudent person would have gotten sketchy too.

Personally, at seeing the car approaching slowly like that with the lights out, I would have drawn my 1911 and held it against my leg out of sight. Just to be prepared, ya know. That situation could have gotten very ugly very quickly.

Downtown one night on a corner waiting for walk signal to change. SUV entering the intersection started to slow down as it approached me and rear window started to come down. I made out four young guys inside but as it came to within 10 feet, a silver barrel started to clear the window pointing right at me. I swept my coat and presented my glock 23 just before they got to me. Something hit me in the chest as I had slack out of trigger and pointed in at the kids head. Caught myself and glanced down... a'hole had hit me with a paintball.

I'll never forget the look on his face as he realized he was just about to die. How many lives could have been devastated by that silly prank that night?

lights

I have got a few 9 led flashlights.they are bright and the batteries last forever.2 for $9 I think.some of the otheres with more leds will blind.how about a bushnell laser boresighter.that would wake them up.
BUT they were looking for a score and you were it.best place to score is in quite spot no one around and a lone figure who is no doubt a victim.be a little more suspisious.wont hurt and you will be more aware.remember there is only seconds to go in action and you will be behind as they have made up their mind already.

Exactly why I would have drawn my 1911 and held it out of sight. Be Prepared!

Nah, noone drives that far out of their way looking to rob someone. Prob a couple kids smoking dope, and wanted to act tough.

Or maybe the boys wanted somewhere quiet to be alone...

LOL!

Prob a couple kids smoking dope
That, or a transaction, seems more likely than a stalking robbery on a dead-end service road.
Perhaps they had a Labrador crap all over their yard, thought it was yours, and were simply trying to return your property to you?
I feel like doing that myself some evenings. ;)

Most robbers don't hang out on dead end roads with no traffic. Kinda ruins their take, since there's not many potential folk to rustle.

I suspect recreational pharmaceutical related motives - buying or selling. They wanted to know if you were a player or a cop.

I expect such incidents to increase as the economy worsens. Thanks to those who recommended the flashlight - I'm buying an extra LED one for my pocket since I have to buy a new one for my helmet today.

If a car approaches me with no headlights I would not "think nothing of it". Lighting up some one you don't know with a flashlight is a good way to start a fight. Taking cover out of sight and being ready for anything they come up with is a better option. Carry all the time.

Everyone is making guesses. All the advice is basically good. Cops will probably not patrol extra, they will probably feel you need to walk earlier or in a different area. Sounds like you were silently interviewed and your body language spoke firmly. It has happened to me in the same way you described except with me it was on a main road late at night with no streetlamps. If you can't avoid your routine, let someone know where you are and when you will be back. Let them know what has happened already so the police can better assist finding your attackers. Carry a bigger gun and a BUG and a flashlight. Walk there in the day and look for places that you could use to escape if they decide to ram you. Best yet, change your routine and walk elsewhere. Next time it could be someone who needs to get past his gang initiative, and then, goodbye brother.

CREE

To the person who asked what a CREE is, or anyone else who may be wondering, what with all this talk of flashlights around:

Cree is a manufacturer of high quality LED components, as are Seoul and Lumileds. Basically, a few years ago, Lumileds came out with their Luxeon LEDs, which work the same as those tiny LEDs you find in cheap flashlights, except on a much more powerful scale - they are specially designed to dissipate heat well, and as a result, are able to handle much more current. For example, an average LED that looks quite bright can handle 100 mA (0.1 A) of current. The Cree XR-E can handle 1000 mA when properly heatsinked, and the efficiency of power converted to light is greater as well.

As with anything involving technology, someone will always find a way to do it better. Lumileds had their Luxeon line, available in 1, 3, and 5 Watt versions, and Seoul and Cree found ways to make their own. Osram's OSTAR LEDs can output over 1000 lumens (for a price) and even cheap Chinese LEDs can look quite similar to the originals now.

One important note: LEDs are sorted by bin, according to how bright and what color they are for a given value of power put through them. Currently, the most efficient that I know of is the CREE XR-E lamp in R2 bin - I ordered a bare lamp on a star, and the thing is simply amazing. Results for the lamp are unpublished in their literature because they have not been out long enough to be popular yet, but any flashlight using one is out of this world (approx 275 lumens at 1 Amp). Flashlights using these and other high-power LEDs are a good investment, as the bulb never needs changing and they are far more energy efficient (and brighter) than ordinary krypton/xenon bulbs, as well as the flashlights with many small LEDs.

To pick up a flashlight with a Cree, Seoul, or Lumileds emitter, check out Dealextreme.com or run a search for the brands mentioned above. Keep in mind these are just the LED names, not the flashlight manufacturers. Be sure to check out reviews before picking one - some come with ridiculously annoying flash/strobe features, when a simple high/low power mode and off will do.

Rondog is the only one in my opinion that got it right.
To the original poster, dont take this the wrong way, but you dropped the ball and could have been killed.
You should have done as Rondog said, and pulled your pistol and held it down, out of sight by your leg and gotten off the road. Even having your pistol {on you not drawn}you would have been toast if those guys already had their weapons ready.
You let them drive up to you, think about it. There is no way you could have gotten your weapon out in time if you needed it if they already had the drop on you.
The reason I bring this up is that it happened to me twice, and I also dropped the ball.
First time was with my brother I wont go into details, but we were shooting paper targets at the time sighting in our rifles. We paused to change targets when someone nearby {rural area} shot a burst of what sounded to be a 22 rifle fire. We just stood there looking for the shooter. I told my brother afterwords that we had just done something stupid as in not immediately jumping for cover.
Second time was about two weeks ago. My cousin wanted to talk with me after his father, my uncle, had just passed away. We met at a very small park which sits right besides a four lane hwy. We were talking when someone in the house on the hill started shooting what sounded like a small caliber pistol. Again, we just sat there. I told him the same thing I told my brother that we had both failed the test, as we should have jumped for cover. Again, we were both armed, but didn't even go for our pistols.
Problem is, there might not be a third time for me. I kick myself everyday for not at least jumping behind a tree after hearing unknown gunfire.
Thing is sometimes we dont think about what to do until its too late, my point is to always be prepared, and this is as much a message to myself as anyone else out there.................................

Well, in retrospect I wish I would have pulled it but as we all know hindsight is always 20/20. What I could have done and what I did do are things that cannot be changed. I am lucky that they didn't try anything, allthough if they would have shot and missed (hopefully) I would of pulled and fired. I acctually feel weird even talking about this because im really not the paranoid type, although some can interpet paranoid as prepared.

Careful with that. Brandishing laws can be a PITA. Not to mention cops are fond of approaching incident scenes slowly with their lights off from time to time. Being questioned as to why you're out at night with a loaded gun in your hand might put a damper on the rest of your night. They get a call about a suspicious person in the area and drive through all sneaky like. You see them with their lights off, don't see it's a cop, and draw your 1911. Now you're standing there with the spotlight in your face and a gun in hand. Have fun with that one.

Drawing your weapon when not faced with a certain life-threatening situation can put you in legal hot water fast.

I would say I'd already have my weapon drawn, while mean muggin them and slowly backing away, but thats just me.

I think, on the other hand, that you should feel lucky that you didn't HAVE to pull it.

As soon as a firearm clears the holster, there are variables spinning out of control. You don't know if you would be here today posting about this.

It is just my opinion, but I'd be happy that I didn't have to draw or CREATE a situtation. Based upon the facts that you have presented, there wasn't a reason to draw.

Driving isn't a crime. Skulking menacingly isn't a crime. If it were, the rap music industry would collapse upon itself.

I'd say that your actions and awareness met the situation you were handed.

Years ago, I was walking with my dog, and I saw a 18-20 year old girl arguing with two hoody looking guys in a nastly looking old car. She was crying, and one of the guys slapped her (lightly), and said, "Don't be stupid! Get out!". She walked towards me, and I asked her if she was ok, and she said yes, but was very upset. I wrote down the plate number of the car, and didn't think anything about it. A few hours later, I'm at work, and I see the same guys, yelling at another girl in the back seat, with the same results, she's blubbering, and gets out, and the passenger points at her, and says, "Don't be stupid honey!!"

So I called the cops, and give the dispatcher the plate, and she comes back a minute later, and says, "Um, that one comes back as one of ours!". It turned out they were vice cops talking to hookers, trying to find out where their pimp was, who was wanted for raping a disabled woman.

Oops.
