Weird question!

If I weren't allowed hollow point ammunition for defense, I would choose a 45 ACP pistol. I would use 230 gr. ball ammo. This is because though they are not hollow points, 230 gr. ball ammo has been proven to do quite a bit of damage. This is because along with it being larger the 45 bullet travels at a lower velocity. These factors create more stopping power. However if this is not an option anything is better than nothing, provided you hit what you're aiming at. hope this helps.

If you are limited to non-expanding bullets, I would suggest the 0.45 and shoot hardball. It worked fine for the Army and it is the most reliable feeding ammo for the .45. What's not to like?

Just a lil bit of information to maybe put your mind at ease, Gunfighting Legend Jim Cirillo most often carried .38spl 158gr Non-expanding ammunition, and it worked, imagine that.

Expanding ammunition helps a little, but as always shot placement and penetration are what really get the job done. Even Wild Bill Hickok would agree, having carried and killed men with a pair of .36 caliber Colt 1851 Navy cap & ball revolvers.
