Hey everyone-

I just moved here from Maine and am looking for ranges to shoot at. Although I would prefer the more relaxed atmosphere of a "sand pit" type of range I will take anything that is open. Is anyone interested in shooting with with me and my wife? We are both very safety conscious and love to burn up tons of ammo! Please let me know. We are anxious to shoot again. :)

Charlotte boasts two indoor ranges that I know of. The best is D&L Sports on the Southeast side of town. I'll have to dig for my map....standby.

D&L has a really nice pro-shop with full-mount Grizzly and Buffalo. Not something you see every day. Plenty of reloading supplies and good lanes to shoot in. Not sure about membership costs as I was there on the company's dime.

Definitely a place to check out.

There's a very, very, very good store off on the west side of town, a bit out, that has the very best collection of shotguns you cannot afford. It's like stepping into the den of some rich aristocrat! I was absolutely amazed and can still remember the smell. They also carry a ton of reloading supplies and a complete line of full-size safes. Hate when I can't remember their name, but the folks that shoot will know what I'm talking about. Ask at D&L when you get the chance. It wasn't far out of Charlotte, and it's right on a main road. That rifle room is a must-see kinda thing!

Map found!! It's a miracle!!!

D&L last known phone number: 704-283-5651

Take Hwy 74, aka Independence Blvd, approx 12mi south/southeast of Charlotte.

Approach Dale Jarrett Ford dealership on your left. The next stop light will be Chamber Drive. Look for the Wilco Truckstop on your left.

Turn Left onto Chamber Dr. Go approx .02mi. D&L is on the left at 2811 Chamber Drive. It sits kinda up on a hill and doesn't look remarkable.

I was there in November of last year, and hope to be up there for some more shooting before November of this year. If you get the chance, stop in at Joe's Crab Shack and say hello to Will Bonner, one of the mgrs. He and I are supposed to get together for some shooting as soon as is possible.

Welcome to Charlotte, the land of 8th highest tax load in the US and a genuine, official UN-sponsored Agenda 21 city.

The gun shopping center is Hyatt Gun shop on Wilkinson blvd. Truly awesome selection of guns.

D&L Guns is just off Independence Blvd headed toward Monroe. Indoor range only.

Firepower is just off Monroe Road in Matthews, NC, a burb of CLT. FP has great people and a decent range.

Charlotte Pistol and Rifle Club is a private members only club. The outdoor range is near Waxhaw, SC. It has trap, skeet, and clays on the public side and a 300 yard rifle, pistol and plinking range on the private side. In Matthews is a 10 lane indoor range which is the best indoor range in the city. It takes quite a bit of work to join the club but well worth the effort. CPRC sponsors PPC competition and a host of long gun competition. You'll have to go to Statesville for IDPA competition.

What part of town you livin' in?

Thanks for the replies all. I will be checking out the ranges shortly and will report back with my impressions. :)

Waitone-

What all is involved with becoming a member at the Charlotte rifle and pistol club? The 300 yard range sounds like a lot of fun. I am anxious to break out my M1 and do some long distance shooting.

P.S.- Maine is the 3rd highest taxed state in the union so I am getting a break by moving here.

Will get you started.

--Need to be sponsored by a member.
--Attend range safety and orientation classes.
--6 months probation. Can shoot only under the eye of a member.
--Donate 12 hours labor (Saturday is work day, 3 hours) during probation.
--Pay membership fees.

The club has a long and proud history of 70+ years without a single gun caused accident.

Taxes:::::those of us of red neck persuasion are outraged at the tax rate, yet when northern refugees settle down they see a net tax reduction. So them new furiners are happy as clams and us rednecks are steaming at the tax rape, er.....rate.

Welcome to Tidy Town.

BTW-

C&E Gunshows is having a show in Charlotte this weekend (21-22 AUG). Last one I went to was pretty good.

Don't remember the location exactly. Google C & E Gunshows for their site.

I used to shoot at Shooter's Express in Belmont quite a bit . IME the best gun shop in the area but I haven't lived there in a few years .

Haven't been there for quite a while but Shooter's Express rented full auto - MP5 and Uzi.

Exposure,

There are a couple of ranges in Rock Hill, SC just south of Charlotte. I shoot at Pappy's Gun Shop near Edgemoor. It about 25 or 30 minutes south of Charlotte. The dues are reasonable and include unlimited range time and ordering anything at wholesale. The club also has a bunch of reloading equioment you can use if you want.

The gunshow is at Metrolina Expo off of i-77 at Sunset Rd.

Welcome to town, Exposure!

I can only repeat the things said here. Firepower is great. Good folks. Not the usual collection of "commandos". There is also a shop in Indian Trail (past Matthews) called Assault Technologies if you are into EBRs. It is on Hwy 74 E. just past Dale Jarret Ford, on the right. It's just before the stop light for D&L. Also in Indian Trail is One Stop Gunworks. It's a little one person gunsmith. Also does some sales, Ruger, some rifles, etc. He does pretty good work. Not very big, but worth supporting.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned, the Gastonia PD opens their rifle and shotgun range to the public on some Saturdays. 100M range. There is also a skeet and trap range there also, but I can't remember if it's open to the public.

Shoot me a PM if you want to go shooting. I usually go to Firepower, but I'm up for anything.

Welcome to Charlotte!

For shooting, its hard to beat Firepower. I'm there quite a bit and would be happy to help you out there. Only restriction is that the pistol range is currently only 50 feet.

For shopping I also like Firepower, You can go to Hyatt to look, but be prepared to get sticker shock. They are very proud of their guns and evidently want to discourage you from buying any of them.

Drop me an email or PM if you need any more suggestions and I'll do what I can.

Welcome to Charlotte, Exposure.

I second all that is said here about the local ranges, Shooters Express being one of my favorites.

I belong to the CRPC, and it's a great group of folks, and some really fine shooters. We did have one incident lately where some IDIOT brought a cannon onto the rifle range, and proceeded to lob a ball completely over the barrier and into somebody's back yard!! The new developments, common all over the area, want us out, and this didn't help.

But the leadership, and members, have all worked hard to correct the IDIOT's bad judgement (if you can even give it that high a rating) and things have simmered back down.

But it's a lesson -- we all have to work on our safety, and watch our brothers and sisters, as well.

Once again, welcome. Check into the CRPC website and drop them a line. You'll be contacted right away for membership.

Moved to Cornelius NC (north of Charlotte) from California and have since found a range/gun club up in Rowan County called Rowan County Wildlife Assoc. (www.rowanwildlife.com). Initial membership is at $600 and $100 therafter yearly, but they've got a real nice set-up. You might want to check them out as well-

Be great if the Charlotte Highroad members got together at the gunshow this next Oct 10th to say hello, and shake some hands. Anyone up for that?

Roon: Hey there neighbor!

Charlotte NC

Lotta folks here from Charlotte/Mecklenburg area!

There's a nice outdoor range about 40 miles north of the I-85/I-77 junction.
North on 85 to the NC 150 exit...Toward Winston-Salem about 3 miles on 150 and you're there. Maybe a NC/THR meet at trhe range one fine day?
Weekdays are best, and the earlier in the mornin' the better. I'm talkin'
7:30-8:00. I may be up for the show Oct 10. Metrolina Expo Center...right?
Haven't been in over 3 years...Time to correct that.

You bet! Sounds like a very good idea.

Whoa! I had just dug this post up yesterday to look up the recommendations for ranges and now it is back is back up again, weird.

I have yet to get any of my firearms out. Well except for my 1911 which is my home security weapon. :D

I would love to meet at the Oct. 10 gun show. Maybe we can take this to PM or just keep this thread alive to get the details worked out as my wife said she would like to go as well.

Back in Maine we used to shoot almost every weekend and I am sorely missing it. Anyone interested in a trip to the range next weekend please respond here or PM me. We have decided that we have got to shoot next weekend so if someone wants to join us the let me know. :)

We are in the process of buying yet another house as an investment property and with the last 2 months of non stop rehab on my current residence I have had very little free time.

We do both ride motorcycles though and have had the chance to explore all over on our bikes. Lots of great riding to be had down here!!!! Any other bike enthusiasts out there?

Hey Exposure,

I'm a bike-kinda-guy, with a Kawasaki KLR-650 (although it's laid up right now, be fixed soon). I've always wanted to put a scabbard on it!

Speaking of the Blue Ridge Parkway, this is a little up the road, in Virginia, same parkway, different name:

Oct. 10th is good for me.

Hmmm...I would luv to hook with Tuner & the rest of you guys. The gun Show? :D Pity I need to buy a car, soon.

Waitone-

Do you ride? The Blue Ridge Parkway makes me drool just thinking about it. And of course a trip to the Dragon is definitely in the future!

Roon-

Good choice in bikes! I sold my DR350 just before we moved down here and now I kind of miss it. :( Here is a pic of our two bikes together back in Maine. My 2002 R1 and my wifes 2001 Ninja 500.

And here is me in action on my old DR 350, I just have to get another on/off road bike, they are just way to much fun!

If you need some help getting your bike going I would be happy to try and give you a hand. I have pretty good mechanical knowledge and love to tinker!

Today we took another ride to do some exploring and ended up in Pineville when we missed our turn. Nice area but it ended being about a 40 mile detour. But extra miles in the saddle are something I rarely complain about and today was no exception. It was a great ride and I managed to stumble across one of my favorite restaurants in the process. Nakato, a Japanese place where they cook the meal in front of you. The last one I ate at was in Atlanta about 7 years ago, now I know there is one only about 20 minutes away from me! That was a wrong turn that really paid off!

Anyway the 10th is good for us as well. Hope to catch you there. Maybe we could get together for breakfast or something first??:D

Welcome to GOD'S COUNTRY....
