Well, I did it...I finally got a 1911... cost me my hi power... will get another HP

I just got my first 1911 (actually a colt 1991a1, never been fired).

Looks to be early, as it's the old roll markings. I can't find the serial on any of the usual sites, but I'm not too worried bout it.

Things I like:
Solid feeling
Heavy
Safety is in a good spot for me

Things I dont like so far:
WTH is this coating crap.. give me a blue job asap
Grips are rubber and not comfortable... will be looking for some thin grips
Slide release... too far forward for working without changing grips

Time will tell how it shoots.

Scythe, try a Nighthawk extended mag release and some slim VZ grips. I like the double diamonds - classic look with great grip. The extended mag release helps me, and I have huge hands....

Congrats on your new gun. I have a couple of 1991A1s, love 'em.

It's not a slide release, it's a slide stop. Rather than trusting it to drop the slide, consider practicing the "slingshot" method. That way reach won't be an issue.

But it is perfectly placed for your other thumb. Slimmer grips may help with the reach, though, and I don't care for soft rubber grips either. There are extended slide stops available, but I am leery of them - they have been known to jump up into the slide notch while there are still rounds left in the magazine.

Pablo- That would called a personal opinion.

45 is superior to the 9mm... not enough to make up for poor shot placement. If you do have poor shot placement, those extra rounds in 9mm can help make up for it.

Honestly, I think the HP is the best firearm I've ever fired... I traded it knowing I would buy another in the future.

Scythe, sorry, I misread. Personally, I don't use the slide release on my 1911's, I just sling shot it. I actually like having the slide release far forward, as my big hands tend to ride the release and prevent it from locking back on an empty mag on many of my other pistols.... But if you are interested, Wilson Combat does make an extended slide release :banghead:

Sounds like you have one of the early versions. If the coating is the black matte finish that is the parkerized finish (later versions have the blued finish). Some like it some don't. Me like it. Infact, I searched for the parkerized finish for carry/hard use. Enjoy.

Because they're single action with a manual safety, and not idiot proof?

Because HK and S&W have squeezed two more rounds of .45 ACP into roughly the same size grip?

Because 9mm Parabellum is suddenly underpowered?

Because 15rd BHP 9mm mags from OEM supplier Mec-Gar are a whopping $24 each?

Looked over Canadian HP in lovely dull black finish and dreaded internal extractor. I will have to get that gun. Used to love Canadian girls, Cuban cigars and Havana Club rum which is sold there. Truth told never been KoolAid drinker much preferring Blue Jolt.

Well, after several months of trying to like the 1991a1.. I got rid of it in order to get another HP. This time it's an argintine FM Hi power in fairly good shape. Couple dings in the finish.. Glad to have one back... not missing the 1991 like I missed the HP right after getting rid of it.

Good for you! I prefer the BHP over the .45 1911, though I have to admit I do like my RIA 9mm 1911 GI model. The Argentine Hi Powers are good guns--enjoy yours!
