Well I made my decision today and commited myself to it.

I went ahead and put a 250.00 deposit down on a Springfield M1A black synthetic Scout/Squad rifle today. I had about 1500.00 budgeted towards a new semi battle style rifle and the M1A won me over. I was throwing around getting a FAL but kept on looking back toward the Springfield instead. All and all the total came to 1420.50 delivered to my FFL which charges me 10.00 to receive guns for me. I'll send the rest off Monday via snail mail . I wanted to put money down on it so they wouldn't sell it off to anyone else. These M1A's are hard to find let alone the Scout/Squad's. I wanted something that I could take to a carbine course should I decided to take one. I know there is one comming up in July at Tac Pro so, who knows:evil: . Anyway, I just wanted to share with you about my new future aquisition. I plan on working a little extra to pick up extra mags and some surplus ammo to wring it out.

Thanks, Flip.

I had thought about one of those, but when i saw my FAL i never looked back.

I have shot a full size M1A with the synthetic stock and liked it.

I agree with you get ammo and mags for it and wring it out, learn how to run it, as Jefferson said may it be your constant companion.

It was almost a dead heat between a FAL Carbine and a short barreled M1A. I think what it really boiled down to was what I could get my hands on first. DSA is like three months behind and a decent priced M1A were almost impossible to find. Comming across this one sealed the lid. People were wanting 1500.00 plus for this gun. I am so looking forward to it.

Well, Flip.... In .308 (or 7.52X59, as it were), I've owned an HK-91, an FN-Fal, a Galil, a SOCOM 16, a Beretta BM62, an M1 Garand converted to .308, and a batch of other lesser rifles not-quite-so-battle-oriented.

I still own the SOCOM 16 and expect I will for the rest of my years. As far as I'm concerned, you just cannot go wrong with the M1A/M14 platform for pure shooting enjoyment.

That said - for financial/investment reasons, I sure do wish I had all of those other rifles back!

How is the recoil on your rifle compaired to say like an AK. I had a SAR-1 I sold off and wonder what to expect.

Thanks, Flip.

Recoil? To me, the SOCOM's recoil is like nothing. A friendly shove more than a kick.

Now my HK-91 - while accurate as all get out (I could manage a 3/8" group at 100 yards, and that's not BS - (I did have an HK squad machine gun aperature peep sight on it though) kicked like a freakin' mule in comparison. Not fun to shoot. Mangled brass and was obnoxiously loud. And, it felt like a damn brick.

The M1A derivatives are pussycats. I'd wager you'll never regret getting one.

They're just....well..... fun!

As to comparison with an AK.... it's a bit more. Heck, it's a bigger cartridge. But the difference is pretty marginal, to me at least.

Personal opinion - I shoot mostly South African. Nice, consistent quality along with reasonable price. But I haven't found anything my rifle won't digest yet. Just keeps on keepin' on.

Did I forget to mention I like the M1A/M14 platform a lot?

:D

You're freaking killing me:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :neener: .

I've been working extra and selling guns that I just don't need to not only streamline my collection but more importantly to finance this rifle. I did it with out going in the hole but, I might have to splurge and order a can of that SA ammo to get it out to the range ASAP. If I pull 12 extra hours at work next pay period, I'll be able to stock up on a few mags and a can of ammo.

Flip;) .

Love those rifles. I have more than one since they just seem to grow on you.:D The scout is a really nice balance.

I think that in semi .308 land, they are up there on the list of ones to have in your collection. The sites, trigger, and reliability are pretty solid. As another said, get A LOT OF AMMO.

Same with my SOCOM-16. Can you recommend some sources for the South African ammunition at reasonable prices?

Enjoy it. I got my M1A (full size, walnut stock) about 2 years ago. I had a few problems early on, but Springfield made it right.

Question about the barrel length

I was just wondering, if any one may find the short barrel very loud? Also, why did you select the shorter version over the longer barrel? Just curious.

There are quite a few gunshows in my areas on a regular basis. I just go with plenty of cash and almost always score a batch.

Well, yeah - the short barrel is pretty loud, but not that much more than any serious caliber rifle. Heck, if you want to talk about LOUD - my Mosin M38 fills that particular bill. None of it matters to me though, I wear a good set of electronic muffs when I shoot anything, so it's a moot point.

And I selected the shorter barrel simply because I'm partial to powerful, handy, quick maneuvering rifles. Personal perference, I suppose.

:)

Personally I would (and did) go with the FAL but rather than a complete DSA model consider getting a parts kit. That's the route I went. I got an imbel kit and bought a receiver from DSA and had them instal and headspace the barrel. Everything else I did myself. It was real easy. You just need to make sure you have at least 7 US made parts. The DSA receiver counts as one that just leaves 6 left. To get these six you can choose from a hammer, trigger, seer, gas piston, pistol grip, forearm, buttstock, flash supressor/muzzel brake and charging handle. Depending on the quality of parts you use building may or may not save you quite a bit of money. But either way, I feel that building a gun makes it a little more sentimental than just buying one.

Mags

Check Armalite's web site. They are still selling off their stock of GI M14 mags. $25 each for decent mags. Better quality than the aftermarket ones I have seen.
