After about 30 or so rounds and getting confident only a fool would ever hit their Chrony. I hit one of the uprights holding the defuser. Got a cease fire and never found the rod. Looked for 10min. Found a peice cyclone fence and straightened it. I was back to shooting. Not a great story just thought I'd share.

Y'know, when they charge you like that you got to be prepared to hit 'em center mass, even better if you can hit CNS. Them things are a hazard once they get on you. Next time you hit it solid and bring it down and we'll find a good recipe for you to whomp it up for the pot.

;-)

[It happens, glad you didn't bust it up too bad]

Haven't shot mine yet, I'm going to try some different materials for the diffuser rods like wooden dowel rod or if I can find the right size plastic dowel , it may just keep it from tipping the unit over when you hit steel diffuser rod.!

Don't feel bad I stuck a arrow center mass in mine:rolleyes: LAst time that thing gives me a false reading.

My daughter and son were always "discussing" who was the better pistol shooter. That conversation always came to a screaching halt when the daughter would say, "and how many sky screen notches on your pistol, Buttnugget????!!!"

Guys and Gals in the shooting sports who use chronographs fall into two categories:

Them that have and them that will (shoot one).

Sorta like pilots who fly retractable gear airplanes - there are them that have and them that will land gear up. I hope I always remain in the "them that will" category :D

Replace the wires with wooden dowels. Might require some fitting, but when you hit one it won't break anything expensive. Carry spares too. :banghead:

Mine is one of the old ones with the tiny cardboard (new one is plastic) screens. Doesn't have much to shoot through. At least it makes you concentrate. I've kept it working for 25 years by not loaning it out to friends that can't shoot. Bwaaaaa, ha, ha, ha....:D

A guy at the plant bought one after I did. He creased the front detector with a 7 mag and it bent a little. After that, he was getting velocities like 4,000 fps range. LOL! We "recalibrated" it using mine by bending on the detector until we were getting correct velocities. At least he didn't center punch it.

Some day, I'll get one of those Ohlers with the HUGE remote screens so I can shoot shotgun loads without worry.

Buddy and I were checking loads in our 338WinMag rifles. He wanted to make sure the velocity was accurately measured for max. at the muzzle, so moved it up real close. About 6-8 feet.
First shot took it down!
Luckily the many holes in the readout display didn't permanently disable it. We guessed it must have been unused powder? Alot of tiny holes, but not through the metal body.

I have all of you beat. I have shot TWO of them.

The first was really not me. I let a young shooter shoot his 357 through it with the understanding that if he shot it, he bought it. He did pay me for it.

I shot the second one. I called the Chrony people and they said to send it in with around $60.00 IIRC and they would replace it. I did and they did. Nice people to do business with.

Thanks for the tip on the wood dowels. I didn't think of that. Mine have been dead center hits anyway.

Question:

How does one shoot a chrony?

I am serious. My buddy and I bought one (used but works fine when we tested it with a bb gun). When it is cloudy out and you du don't need the shades, do you still have to shoot very close to it?

I Never :uhoh: shot my chrono. (crap happens you know!! LOL)

Luckily the Pact Model 1 has the electronics separate from the sensors. If you do shoot the sensor it only costs $19.95 to replace since the electronics are on the bench next to you and only the sensors and diffusers are in harms way.

Well I have to resurrect this thread. Just like Bombmaster said, I figured you'd have to be a total dope to shoot your chrony.

So I'm adding myself to the list of total dopes. Fortunately I just nicked the top edge and it still works. I even have tape on the dowels so I have a reference for where to hold my reticle. So much for good planning....
