My father-in-law just presented me with an "additional" Christmas gift...

The Remington pump .22 that had been his when he was a boy.

His father bought it for him during the Depression.

Apparently they never hurt for money during that time, as he had a secure job with the railroad.

It needs a little TLC, but it looks to be in good condition overall.

In reality, I recognize that I'm only holding it in trust for a few years for our oldest, my stepson, but I'll gladly pass it on when the time is right.

Ah...grandpa's guns....

I've got my grandfather's (well, among several of his guns) old Winchester pump action .22. It's it sad shape though, it was in the basement for who knows how long. It functions, after a whole lot of Liquid Wrench and elbow grease. It was seised up bad. It's missing the magazine tube as well. It has the octagonal barrel, which apparently is kind of rare, but is in good shape bore-wise. I think it's a .22 short only model too.

Anyways, I would love to have this gun restored. I have heard stories about him as a kid in the Depression, being handed 3 .22 rounds and told to come home with no less than 3 rabbits or squirrels. My relatives were extremely poor during the Depression, so just the sight of that little rusty .22 really means alot to me. Probably means even more to my grandmother...I should see about that, at least get it presentable, if not shootable again.

I also have my other grandfather's old single shot .22. He had similiar experiences during the Depression. My dad said he learned to shoot with that gun. He would shoot coke bottles. Then grandpa would take the rifle, and shoot the bottlecaps. All because of shooting squirrels during the Depression for food. That .22 is in fine shape, and one of these days I'll get some shorts for it and see if I can hit some bottle caps with it!

Well, I don't know much about guns at all, other than some knowledge of WW II firearms.

I figure I'll take it to Mike Irwin and see what he has to say about it.

Pop figures he hasn't shot it since the 1960s, and its been in his closet ever since.

It's very hard to operate -- I'm guessing it needs cleaning?
