Even though my dad was a hunter and use to keep the few rifles he had in our house, my mom has never liked guns. She said she's only shot a rifle once and she'll never do it again. She definitely doesn't like that I'm so into them. Anytime I'm watching the news with her around and there's a clip about someone being shot and killed, she will always say "See, that's why I don't like guns".

Anyways, today I had got the NRA magazine in the mail and I was looking through it and my mom was in the room and we got to talking/arguing about guns. But the timing couldn't of been more perfect because she had the TV on in the background and it was on the local PBS station. They were playing a speech from the president of the Mormon church. It was from earlier this year because he was talking about the war in Iraq. Basically he was saying things like peace is good but we have a sacred obligation to fight for our family and for liberty and against tyranny and evil. And then he said, "pray for those who are called upon to bear arms". Right then I looked at my mom and just smiled. Now, my mom being a devout Mormon, couldn't dispute what she had just heard. It was great! She finally said something like, "I know they are necessary sometimes, but they just scare me." It wasn't the perfect admission from her, but a huge step in the right direction and it made my day.

Well, if I recall correctly, Missouri still has a law on the books that makes it legal to shoot mormons... Of course, those days are LONG past, but should never be forgotten, lest we repeat 'em...

The LDS (aka. Mormon) Church is a devout supporter of the US Constitution, and not just selective bits of it. When it comes to elections, the only official word on who and what to vote for is essentially this, "Study the issues and the candidates, and then prayfully cast your vote." because the right of the individual to choose is paramount in the church's theology; so is the obligation of experiencing the consequences of those choices.

No, the LDS Church is NOT anti-gun(2nd Amendment), it is pro responsibility and owning up to choice consequences.

Mormans & guns

When the gubmint asked the Mormans to raise a battalion to fight in the Mexican-American War, they did and a battalion marched off to San Diego. No fighting but they did a lot of public works project.

One Morman who wanted to join was Johnathan Browning, but as he was their only gunsmith, he was ordered to stay behind and make guns instead. We know him better for his son, John Moses Browning.

BTW, I visited the Morman Battalion thingy in Old Town, San Diego. Virtually everything else was closed so why not? Well, they asked me about what I knew about the Mormans & I told them that I knew they purportedly had the "missing" third book, that they were chased from every state they were in until they reached Utah (so far, so good) and then I had to add that the greatest gun designer was a Morman, John Moses Browning. I then went on about some of the guns and how they remain the watermark by which others are measured. Of course, they didn't know any of the important stuff like how great the 1911 is or how the M-2 is still in use today or how the BAR was among the first portable and reliable machinegun.

Perhaps you can share that with mum?

Nope. That law was repealed by Governor Christopher "Kit" Bond, in the 1970's.

One of my shooting buddies in college was Mormon. One of the few guys I'd see eye to eye on a lot of stuff. The liberals professors would always piss him off. I was always sleeping. (I got a C+ in the class I think).
