My mom asked me what I would like in my stocking this year. I told he to go drop 8 bucks at walmart and get me some .22 ammo for plinking.
She says... "I'm not buying you bullets! That's evil". I was amazed! haha
I was like "Why is that evil?".
She's like "well... what do you think about the shootings in the news"?
I said "they're horrible. What did you think of the lady that killed the gunman, becasue she was carrying a weapon in the church?"
She says "Well... she's qualified. she was a trained member of their security staff". (slap forehead)
I explain to her the fact that she was a private gun owner that volunteered her serviced to the pastor, JUST INCASE there was a copycat shooting becasue of the shooting earlier in the day.
Mom says "WOW. That's not what the news said"!
NO kidding.

So she says "If I get you bullets for christmas you have to promise that you aren't going to let your son near them"
I say "Now mom... why would I let him near them, and second of all what are they going to do to him without a gun to shoot them in?"
She says "I don't know! I jsut don't know"
I tell her "Mom. all my guns are unloaded, and in a gun safe that has a VERY GOOD 3 point locking system. I have the only key to it and that key is never within reach to the kid"
She says "That's good! Do you have trigger latches for them all"?
???????????
Me "What's that mom?"
Her" You know.... little thingies that keep them from touching the triggers. They lock them up"
ME "OH! Trigger locks? Yes! I have them, but don't keep them on the guns, becasue they're unloaded in the safe. I DO lock them if I have them out of the safe and cleaning them. Not because I'm afraid of my son with an unloaded gun, but I'm avoiding any chance of that gun being made accessible to an unexpected criminal or any other person that has no business touching the gun....and that does include the kid".
She says "Oh that's so good to hear. I jsut don't like guns, and don't want you to have them around me."
ME "Mom... that's fine. But I've had guns in my car many times when you've riden with me"
Her "You have!?!?!?!?!? I had no idea"
Me "That's becasue it's not a big deal. I wasn't announcing it. They're just tools mom. I don't tell you when I have a screwdriver in my car."
HEr "Oh... I guess that's a good point"
ME: "BEsides mom.... if I was carrying a gun one day, and we were approached by someone else with a gun... wouldn't you want that sort of protection available? Atleast something that gives us a chance?"
Her :Yes I suppose that makes sense for you, and I'm glad that you're responsible in that way, but it just doesn't apply to me"
Me: Why not mom?
Her "Well...I believe that God wouldn't let the bullets hit me."
Me "What"?
Her "I just believe that my Faith in God is strong enough that I can speak my safety into existance, and not have to worry about Bulletts"
Me :Ok mom... even if that is true, Doesn't the bible talk about us taking care of ourselves and doing the best we can to preserve our bodies becasue we are gods temple"?
Her "Yes.... but God will protect me"

Man.... this is the weird religious thinking I've tried to get away from.
I believe a lot of things, and I have strong faith, but I am not willing to believe that GOD is going to stop 2 people with free will from interacting. And... this isn't the MATRIX!!!!!!
BUt...it was good to have a talk with my mom, and even though it was wacky, she even said at the end, that I had calmed some of her worries about me being a gun owner, and she is so proud of how responsible I was with my "toys".

Man....what a weird day! hahaha

Sounds like you did as well as you could. You then hit a wall of irrational thinking.

Let's assume for a minute that God could and would protect someone of strong faith. Does she think that nobody murdered in the past five (or 10 or 100) years had as much faith in God as she?

You might remind her god moves in mysterious ways, and tell the story of the farmer on his roof during the flood.

When a helicopter came to rescue him he wavedit away, saying god would provide for him. Later when a boat came to rescue him he waved it away with the same explanation. When he found himself facing the lord he asked "lord why didn't you save me", and the lord answered - "I sent a helicopter and a boat, what more did you want?"

^actually... she said that the people in the recent shootings in Colorado weren't "listening to the Holy Ghost". She says whenever she hears that little voice, she leaves places or won't take that plane, or won't go to that store. She says she's not judging anyone, and doesn't think she's better than anyone else, but believes she is on a higher plain of hearing God's voice and that she also would be able to call down power from Heaven to make the bullets drop to the ground.

Ugh.... so frustrating! You can't argue with that kind of thinking!

that is excellent. But the moment has passed... maybe some day I will use that analogy! that's really good one.

Nightwing....

I'm glad this conversation has turned out better than the other, but...

Did you decide this week was "Bring up guns with the women in my life week?":neener:

NO! hahahahahaha!
It sure seems that way, huh?
My mom always likes to get stuff for family members for their stockings. But she usually gets some crap we'll never use and that is fattening, useless, or a cute momentary novelty.
This year she asked for opinions from each of is. I just told her a cheep box of 22 ammo for plinking and target practice would be way cool!
That's how it started. hehe.

This is one of my beefs with religion. People sit around and just expect God to provide for them.

I was always taught that God helps those that help themselves....

In other words.....

Defend yourself; God will guide your bullets and send the bad guy's astray. That is how God helps you.

My husband and I generally only people consumable gifts because we don't like inflicting clutter on other people. From that pov, ammo is one of the best gifts there is. :D

Ask your mom if she: wears seatbelts, stops at stopsigns, has health-auto-homeowners-life insurance. No need if 'God protects her'.

Also ask her if she is willing to take a nap on the highway centerline. God gave us sense enough to do some things to take care of our own self!

^See?
I agree.
Every year we get a million little "things for the house" but....we heave plenty of things. I'd rather have cash, or a gift card to a grocery store, or something!

Man, don't know what to say there.

I'm probably one of the biggest anti-religion people around and even I know that they teach "god helps those who help themselves".

I feel for ya, my own mother has some really strange denial over guns. She doesn't want to even hear that I have them. Total denial. Strange.

IBTL.

We don't discuss religion here; this is a gun forum. We don't do women bashing here. This is a gun forum. We don't complain about our relatives here. This is a gun forum.

Please read the rules for this forum, read the forum for awhile, then after you get a sense of what this place is about, start posting again.

^Spring Mom!!!!!! I'm not mom bashing, gun bashing, or woman bashing.
I know that everything involving men and women conversing seems to upset you, but please understand that I love my mother very much, and I share the same religion as her (except we both seem to be at very different ends of the spectrum).

I'm just sharing a funny story from my day. That is all. If you don't like it, I'm sorry. I didn't do it to offend you or anyone else, therefore I can not apologize for anything I said, as it was just a story! I mean....if someone talks about 9-11 in here does everyone say "We don't talk about senseless killings in the name of religion"? No.... becasue that's not what the thread was about in the first place.

Once again... sorry if you've decided to be offended... I was not part of that decision!

Now... back to the conversation!

ill let you in on my own conversation that happened a few months ago (august).
This conversation was between me and my gf.

s : i really dont like the fact that you own guns... theres no real reason for them.
me: the reason is simple, because i want to be able to protect you from anything that i might have to
s : i havent needed protecting yet...
me: but if you had then... no nevermind, will you come with me to the range and shoot one of them with me?
s : uhm... ok.
since then she has claimed ownership of my XD9... open minded people ftw :)

I'm wrong for telling a story?
I don't think it's right or wrong.... it's a story.
IF I read you a book do you say "You're wrong"? No..... you could argue that date in the book is incorrect... but not that I AM WRONG.
Also... I was part of the conversation with MY MOM.... pretty sure I was there. And it wasn't a RIGHT OR WRONG conversation.... it was a conversation.
