Went to NRA range today for 1st time.

Over all not a bad experience. I was post call (24 hour duty) at Walter Reed Army Medical center. Busy night w inbound casualties from Afganistan (don't forget we are fighting there too!)and the CINC WIFE LANT gave this troop permission to have a boy's day so I packed up the ar 15 & 10, garand, 300 wetherby, and m1a and went to the NRA range. Took 30 seconds to complete the safety quiz, bought a dozen targets and took my lane. Over all a bunch of nice guys. The young ones saw my short, grey hair, milspec gallses and my 0-4 ID and were all yes sir/ no sir. I paid for an hour, but they let me stay as long as I liked (as long as no one was waiting for a lane) without extra charge. There was one old coot range officer that was rude, obnoxious, and...well....just goddamned stupid. I got into it with him and left a bit annoyed. I've been in over 16 years now and I've been on many ranges, but this dude was pure idiocy!
My old man's garand , my m1a , and the ar10 functioned flawlessly. The 300 wetherby mag gave me scope face( my own fault was creeping up on the scope, when round 8 was WHAM!!! right in the kisser.) After bloody nose subsided, started with the brand new fulton armory special ar15 and after several failures to extract and failures to go into battery later, I left in a rather foul mood although I met one of Prince George's finest and may get to go on a ride along!
As I sit, daughter #2 is asleep in her bouncy seat, Wife and daughter #1 have taken commie sister in law to the movies w her kids. I've a stogey in my left and and a scotch in my right, so things are, right now, at least , doing ok. God bless the USMC and the 7th calvary (Gerry Owen!), and screw Fulton armory. Dr. Zack Out.

Polishing the chamber? Is that supposed to be euphemism for something else? Navy Doc, glad to hear you had a fun time at the range! OUCH! I couldn't imagine what getting hit by the scope feels like.

Ya gotta love milspeak! I trust there's no CINCWIFEPAC or you're in big trouble! I worked at the NAVCOSSACT in the '70's (civ advisor) and when I told someone unfamiliar with those types of abbreviations (I forgot who) that I was working there, he said, "Huh? You're working for the Russian Navy?"

I think I know the old geezer at the NRA range you're talking about. He will pick nits 'til the cows come home with almost anyone. But, almost without exception, the range folks are very easy to get along with.

Scope face reminds me of stock jaw.

I fired a 12 gauge magnum slug yesterday and the shotgun slipped off my shoulder and hit me in the jaw bone.

Couldn't eat dinner last night and woke up chewing on tooth shavings.

My shoulder doesn't look much better

Thank goodness I didn't fire those out of my old 870 with the hard plastic butt plate.

i musta been there 20 times now and every time i go in there he asks "you ever shoot here before?"

You recommend Kevlar for PG county? Thats pretty brave. I'd go with Spectra Shield and trauma plates. My brother dated a PG county cop's daughter last year, some of the stories she related to him were pretty interesting.

Let's put it this way, the "resource officers" in our schools still have their vests on as well as their weapons. Lots of scholarly activities going on

Doc if you go for a ride along in PG ask to ride in Henry or George Sector (district 3). best gurantee for action. Don't let all of the vest talk psyche you up to much. I ran in District Heights as a Vol. firefighter for 10 years, saw my share of shootings etc, and never once had to sweat it out in one of those damn vests. Like Murphy's rules for Grunts says: "Important looking targets get shot at first, this is why aircraft carriers are known as bomb magnets". That telltale way you shirt puffs out funny will make everyone around you know you're wearing a vest, and you're scared (even if you aren't). Ride at night if you can, the neighborhoods come "alive" after sundown.
