Went to the range today. Long

Well I went to the range today and shot my weekly regiment. Had a great time with my g23. Anyways, a couple of lanes over there were a couple of guys and a girl shooting HK USP's. They were shooting on the 10 yrd pistol targets and were all over thier targets. Not a big deal I simply figured they were new to shooting. They had brass all over the place and did not sweep up or anything during any of the cease fire wich is a pet peeve of mine. So I was sweeping up everything. Still I tried to be a good neighbor and have a casual conversaion with one of them. I asked him how he liked his HK and he said that he loved it, said they were "The best guns made." Told me I should trade in my Glock for one. So I said yeah I'd think about it (Whatever). So they then moved over to the 35yrd steel target. First up was one of the guys. He proceeded to hit the target three out of 20rds. Next up was the girl. She proceeds to hit the ground with 10 out of 20 rds and not hit the target at all. Second guy was much better. 8 of 20. Range master walks over and offers to help the girl with her flinching. She says " Yeah Yeah I already know what I am doing wrong." So he walks away. By now I am annoyed so with out making a big deal about it I walk over to the steel target and proceed to hit it with all 20 rds. I then casually walk back to my target and continue shooting feelng much better. Well when I go to cash out I am talking to the range master and he tells me that all three of them are Santa Barbara Sherrifs deputys. I could not believe it. Its nice to know we have people of this skill out on the streets protecting us. Good thing I live in Ventura County wich is one county over.

Sorry to say, but a lot of LEO's have guns, only because they are issued. I still see some that spend the only range time, when they qualify. Now me on the other hand, spend waaaayyyy too much time on the range. And if I can get paid to shoot, even better! Almost as much fun as getting paid to ride Harley's, and I do get that chance.

I worked for a short period of time on a college/police range when I was going thru school. I got to help run a lot of different drills and was one of the people that helped beginners who had trouble. It was rewarding.

As a rule most cops cant hit their own foot holding the muzzle against their boot with both hands.

Of course there are supremely good exceptions (3 of whom taught our classes) but most of them just plain suck... at least in this area.

Quallification was a joke back then. I do not know what it is now, but the passing scores had less to do with accuracy than putting lead downrange. Qualification was without the adrenaline part of the equation, with full lighting, and man sized targets at close range. Some barely passed.

What's that movie saying? Aim small miss small? It is never a surprise to me when I read of cops tossing a lot of rounds and missing with most or all of them in a real situation.

I can not tell you for sure why, but I noticed a tendency in almost ALL of the sworn officers a tendency to think that they were 'above' learning the basics and 'far better' than the average.

The cops that got good were the ones that came in with an almost meek attitude. Those who were truly willing to listen never failed to improve.

I used to shoot a t a range that was across the street from a police department and cops shot at this place all the time. I would say that in the 3 years I shot there I might have seen4-5 cops that were good. THe worst were border patrol. I saw an instructer in there teaching two other officers and he barely could hit a target at 25 yards( full size sihlouette target)

I just shot one of those Glock GSSF matches last weekend, There were approx 30 LE signed up in the LEO catergory. All the ones I saw were Fast and Good. Some amazingly so. My CHP buddy also just is flat out good with a gun. Just like with us civilians there are going to be good and not so good shooters and one of the determing factors to this ability is constant practice, which the good guys do and the not so good guys don't. Seems simple enough to me.

Question:
dod different regional areas, departments, and rank have anything to do with the amount of training and the testing they have to have? Like in some cities and in some departments do they have to be better shooters then in others?

great another "I" out shot the police thread. i read this so much on this forum, but i would bet that 85% of the cops i know could out shot 85% of the people on this board. 187

I guess that it depends on what cops you hang around with 187. I think the general concensus is, that for someone whose job it is to carry a gun to be bad shot is unacceptable. Of course the average cop probably never will draw shoot their gun during their career so the point might be moot. I am simply saying that in the 3 years I shot with cops at this range I saw at least 10 cops per week shoot. Over that time I saw maye 5 that were excellent and 50 that were good enough. Of course I have also been to USPSA matches with cops that were fantastic. Those people are far from the average. I had a neighbor who was a cop and he would always joke how bad the average cop is with guns. AS far as the average cop outshooting the average person on this board ??? Got me. I have only shot with a couple people from here. They were good but they shot competitively so it was expected.

I belive it, most (not all) cops I've seen at the range are pretty bad too, although not that bad. There was one Pierce County deputy who was very good with his Sig 226. Good enough that anyone he was firing at within 150 yards would be in serious danger.

The cops you know 187 are likely the kind that take the time to actually learn how to shoot. I'd belive that 85% of the cops you know are good shots, but not in a million years that 85% of cops are good shots.

jeeper, the average armed ctiizen is even less likely to draw his gun than the average cop. john, they all have to quailify. and i'm talkin ocpd, where i worked for 22 years.don't know bout other states. and yes there are cops that only carry a gun cause they have to. 187

Out of curiousity, what kind of shooting did they have to do to qualify, and over those 22 years did the requirements or course of fire change?

As a non law enforcement person I would think that something like an IDPA course of fire would be a more realistic / better qualification course than 50 rounds shooting at a bullseye target.

Well whaddya expect? It's not like someone's going to start an 'I outshot a bunch of accountants' thread. (Though I would were I to, somehow by sheer luck, outshoot Correia.)
Cops carry guns on a daily basis, it's part of their job to be proficient with them. As gun geeks that's how we're going to judge them (for better or worse.)

Having said that, I do have to say that it seems like with cops there isn't much middle ground. They seem to be either scary good or scary bad when on the range.

I have a brother in law who is a cop in nearby town who just got a new sidearm and he only fam fired the last one let alone this one.

He has a full sized silouette target in his basement from when he first qual'ed that has shots all over the place.

Hey, hey now...what are you trying to start here? You trying to imply that I need more range time? I'm trying the best I can, I can't help if all the sights, even the adjustable ones, are off on my guns.
