I spent the day at the range & had a great time. MY shoulder is sore, I'm a little red on my cheeks. The Heat index was 100 - 105.....But it was worth it.
Despite a gusting crosswind, the best groups of the day all at 100yds, from a sandbag rest were:
1. 1-1.25" group out of a borrowed remington 700 .223 (4 of the 5 shots making on large hole. The fifth, "Flyer" was in the bullseye, but toward the opposite side).
2. A 1.5" (3 shot) group from my m96 swedish mauser. It was my last 3 rounds, after finishing sighting it in. I had a few 5 shot groups where the shots were stringing horizontally even though I was trying to time the gusts, Threre was a 5-10 minute period of relavily calm wind when I finshed with the 3 shot group.
3. A 2.25" group out of my NO1MK3 with surplus ammo. (the first 2 rounds were hang fires, almost like a flint lock, or purcussion muzzleloader.....click......boom)
4. I had a mediocre results with my type 99, Japanese rifle. It seems to shot very well, but the sight opening is so large it was hard to be consistant in elevation. I was able to walk the shots down and hit the bullseye, but it was hard to resume shooting at the correct elevation between groups.
5. a 3.5" group from my SKS with golden bear ammo (not bad IMO)
6. was able to dump a few mags with the AK into a pie plate at 100yds (again not bad IMO, for an AK 5-6" +/-) The interesting part with the AK was that it didnt seem to mater shooting off hand or from a rest.
7. I wasnt thrilled by the mosin nagant 91/30. It has a nice barrel, not counter bored with strong rifling. I was using copperwashed surplus ammo, (not sure if it was light or heavy, I suspect heavy) I was only able to shoot slightly better than the AK with the MN 91/30, from a sandbag rest (4-5"). I bought it for the history, as I have some nice WW2 rifles..... However, I was hoping the rifle would shoot a little better. (No, I'm not going to start screwing with it to improve it, I am aware that it can be done.......) but for under 100, I'm still considering getting another.
