Western Field, 270 Win Cal. - seeking reviews

I have a 270 Cal. rifle which I am planning to use for deer and elk hunting.
The ID on the barrel reads: Western Field, Model 720B EHM, 270 Win Cal., Made in West Germany. I would appreciate input as to the worthiness of this rifle for deer and elk hunting. Or would it be advisable to sell it and opt for a more suitable piece. Also would like to know the aprox. market worth of this rifle in the event that I choose a replacement model. It is in very good condition, 24", R.H. Bolt action, Wood stock, Conventional sights and leather shoulder sling.

Can you post a (several) photos? Pictures generate interest. If the rifle is a Mauser, I'm for sure interested....Unless it's been trashed. The 270 caliber is perfectly suited for deer, elk, moose, anything but the biggest bears.

That rifle was made by F. W. Heym. It is made on a Mauser action. They were sold by Montgomery Wards before '68 mail order ban.

There is no reason that the rifle in good condition would not be a fine deer rifle. The caliber is well suited for that purpose.

I guess I should have said "Mauser 98" instead of just "Mauser"..........Your rifle is very well suited to your intended purpose, and you would be ill advised to trade or sell that rifle. Go shoot your deer or elk.

You'll find that in the old days, major retailers marketed some fabulous weapons under store brand names. I have a JC Higgins rifle in 270 (Sears store brand). It's a Mauser 98 Belgian action with a High Standard chromed barrel. The walnut stock is of a bit higher grade than you'll see today on the shelf too. I would bet that your Montgomery Wards rifle has some of the same traits.

When I finally learned enough about what I have (inherited), I stopped wanting any new rifle. I wouldn't trade my rifle for any 6 new rifles. You would do well to learn about yours the same way.

The 270 Winchester has a sterling reputation for harvesting deer, elk, and moose that goes back to the 1920's, almost 100 years. You don't need any other caliber, and any new caliber that you did pick would almost certainly be worse.
