Whaaaaat? TFL gone!!

I know that this must have gone around but I was very busy away from my computer at Christmas time and for a couple weeks thereafter. When I returned to my computer, like most/many of you I had waiting an email saying that the Firing Line was "Closed". No acceptable reason (to me at least) was given. Just that it was the greatest and it was closed.

I have tried to read the December/January posts on THR relating to TFL, but frankly there are too many to read and none that I have seen has offered any further information/discussion.

I can see that many of the same folks are here....For that I am glad. I had/have great admiration and respect for the knowledge base on TFL. I will miss it. I do not need to say how knowledgeable the members were or how willing they were to share their knowledge.....All who were there know that and anybody who wasn't there would think I was only giving it lip service.

It is not that I expect less of this board or that have any criticism to make that I inquire; What the hell happened. . I guess because TFL seemed soooooo successful and of such high quality that I am shocked that it is just suddenly gone. The only thing that shocks me more is that nobody is talking about why!!!

I feel as if maybe everybody else knows why but is reluctant to discuss it. Is there a taboo on the discussion? Does anybody know why? Am I the only one who does not know why?

I may never leave town for christmas again.......Geeze!

Rich decided to pull the plug. We don't discuss it because we've already gone over it.
 
The government was really behind it all... everyone here knows that, but are too scared to speak out. The deception, the cover up, and intimidation go all the way to the top of our political system.

I realize that revealing this information makes me a marked man.

Tell the world my story...

No, Iwas at TFL probably at least once a week and every day in spells. I am real busy right now and I was outa town since before Christmas and then even busier when I got back because I had been away.......Say, you writting a book?

PigPen, I realize it must have been a bit of a shock, but remember your manners, please. Rich announced that TFL would close early in December, and December 31st was the last day. The High Road has been open since Christmas eve. Believe me, TFL's closing was hashed out for weeks on TFL, which is why people aren't bothering to talk about it now. Obviously nobody has closed your thread about TFL's closing, so clearly it's not taboo.

If you want to know why, Rich's announcement is still up on TFL. There's also a newer forum there titled "TFL Farewells." You'll need to go into your profile and set it to "show all posts" but every single post is still there and the search function still works.

The short version is that Rich decided he was spread too thin between SWAT, other Group One duties, and TFL. Something had to give, and he was burned out on TFL. Many of us who came along later forget that when Rich founded TFL it was to be a one-year experiment. That was four years ago.

I'm not sure what you meant by "acceptable," but I find Rich's reasons perfectly acceptable. I didn't like losing TFL, but I never forgot that it didn't belong to me. Rich doesn't owe us a forum, in other words. Once you get over the initial shock of finding TFL gone, most of this will probably make more sense.

The High Road is different from TFL, but it's a nice place. There's also a new forum called The Firing Range ( http://www.thefiringrange.com ) which is mostly populated by TFLers.
 
Welcome aboard PigPen. Like Don mentioned, there's a "Farewell Forum" that discussed the closure of TFL. Life goes on and thanks to Oleg, many of us have a new home.

I too was distraught when I read of TFL closing.

TFL taught me EVERYTHING I now know about RKBA and firearms. EVERYTHING.

It was like losing the best teacher you ever had.

But you know what? Now that THR is up and running, I don't really miss TFL, and you know why?

Because 'most all of the PEOPLE from TFL are HERE.

And it is the PEOPLE that matter, the PEOPLE that made up TFL, the PEOPLE that now make up THR.


Hmmmm....just like the Founding Fathers thought...it is THE PEOPLE that make the difference.

The PEOPLE are all here, so settle in!!!! :D

PigPen, TFL for Rich was like a lot of stuff in lifeitsownself for almost everybody. You start on something out of curiosity; it's sure-enough fun for some period of time--and then it gets to be more work than fun. That stage is called "burnout" and it's common for lotsa people in lotsa activities.

For me, the Big Burnout was that I got fed up with working on race cars as a one-man band. Racing's fun, but I hit that point where I hated to go work on the car--so I quit. For other folks, it might be a job or a marriage.

When you hit burnout, you find that when you quit you're suddenly lighter and younger. :) Boy, does it feel good!

Mr. Lucibella was not your employee, and even if he was is free to quit without explanation. No "sorta" involved.
I'm sure your subscription fee to The Firing Line can be returned.
I think the fact that we were given an explanation, a warning, and time to set up other sites was more than he needed to give. Especially since he could have closed up the site earlier and spent the he uses to administer the site with family and friends. Remember that The Firing Line was kept open through the holidays.
Though I was disappointed in the closing of The Firing Line, I was more gratified by the fact that it existed in the first place, free and open to all who stayed polite. Nobody owed it to the users to keep the site going, or to open up similar sites.

I'm not sure that your tone is called for. I know it's sometimes hard to get the correct sense of how some one means something when it's written instead of delivered in person but whether you know it or not, your remarks strike me as unduely harsh. I hope I'm wrong!

I never impied that I was owed anything; just that I enjoyed the site and would miss it and that I didn't understand why it had closed so abruptly. Remember, I have said that I did not read the traffic on TFL regarding it's closing. Personally, if I had been in the web masters shoes, I might have done things differently. If I was tired of the site, I might have asked some one else to take it over for instance....maybe not......I can only assume the web master thought about his options and make his choice. I am willing to admit that I have not considered the ramifications of all of the possible options but my initial gut reaction was surprise and curiosity as I have stated. I meant no disrespect to anyone and certainly understand that nobody "Owes" me anything.....OTOH, there is no prohibition against me asking for more information.

If I have unintentionally offended anybody, I oppologize.

In the mean time, if you have intended to offend me by setting me straight, I do not appreciate your presumption that it is your place to do so. I don't owe you anything either and I do not recall asking you personally to respond.

Once again, if I have mis-judged your tone, I oppologize for that but if I have not then my remarks stand.

If your tone had been different, Croyance wouldn't have had to set you straight. It was your words that set the tone of this thread. When you show up at the end of the party and act like you've been cheated, nobody feels the need to tread lightly where your feelings are concerned.
 
The BATF was behind the closing of TFL, They had tried to move the servers to a secret base below moon lake in Utah, but Rich refused and so he instead decided to shut the operation down before the gov'ment could get their hands on it.

MIB...

No, seriously, Rich has a life to live, and it's HIS board.. And now we have THR, and so life goes on...
