Decided to do a little sniping on rabbits today with Grandpa's old Glenfield Model 20. This .22 is my favorite rabbit rifle for obvious reasons...it was my Grandpa's !! He passed on in 1987 and this is how I honor his memory with a solo hunt with his spirit by my side. He definitely must of been with me today, because all my shots found their mark to make clean one shot kills. I will now honor my grandmother's memory with some of that rabbit being fried the way she did it. Mashed potatoes, corn niblets, and homemade apple pie will make a nice meal for the family tommorow. It was good day and a bit of relfection of the grandparents I loved very much.

Happy New Year !!

looks like a brace of wasklies there. nothing goes better with wasklies than cornbread muffins.. yumm. if you pelt the hides, youd make some very nice slippers for someone

Thanks alot guys.
It seems that the Mange has really hit the coyotes hard the last couple years and the bunny population has exploded locally. These rabbits are larger than what I have normally seen in years past. A couple of these easily fed a family of 4 and the rest went to the freezer for later. I think the kid and I are going to have to get some more..most definitely. :)

A couple more that are coming for supper courtesy of this 10/22... :)

Even my son got into the act with his new dedicated .22 upper....

Very nice. For some reason, in this area, rabbits don't seem nearly as plentiful as they once were - anyone know why? Maybe it's because in Nebraska, you have mountain lions to check the population of rabbit-eating coyotes, and we don't...dunno.

Thanks OP for the original post. What a great legacy to receive and pass on. Kudo's!!! As lucky as you feel now, I'm sure your son will later.

Nice catches by the way.:D

Good shooting, I plan on trying for a few with my Marlin model 39A. You must have a more liberal bag limit in Nebraska...here in WV it's 5.

Around here they are not as thick because of the change in agricultural practices. Less wasted land, brush piles and fence rows. They are still to be found, but it takes a heck of a lot more work.

We've had an increase in coyote, mountain lion, bobcat, and foxes in our area due to farms being sold and left open and vacant. Those farms are now safe havens for these predators to roam.

We still have a bunch of rabbits, but there is no way I could go out and kill that many in a day. Maybe in my car....

Slakline,
I haven't hunted rabbit since I was a kid. Your post has made me really want to go out and get some.

Are you hunting public land by chance? Any recomendations for places to go? I'm in the Omaha area.

Omaha/Lincoln area public lands should all hold some rabbits. Shouldn't have to travel too far. It may take a couple scouting trips to find a spot. Tree strips, brush piles, plum thickets and shelter belts are good bets. After a snow , on the next sunny day, check for rabbit activity by looking for tracks and droppings. It's easy to get 'em with the shotgun but try to put the bead in front of their heads to minimize damage to the prized backstraps and hind quarters. I prefer getting them with the .22lr rifle from long distance (75-100yds.). I simply enjoy the challenge and doesn't spook them as quick. However, I cannot pass on easier shorter shot opportunities. In Nebraska, the daily limit is 7 and the season runs until the end of Feburary. So there is plenty of time and opportunity to get you some bunnies.
