What 5 current production revolvers would you buy?

Right now I think im thinking the following for 3 of them really unsure about others.

Ruger super redhawk
Ruger gp100 4"
Smith 686

GP100 and Smith 686 are redundant in caliber. Do you have in mind to vary the barrel length or maybe get 7 rounds in a 686+?

That Super Redhawk is one ugly gun to my eyes.

In my experience there are only two manufacturers to buy a revolver from,
Smith and Wesson and Ruger.
Rugers are durable as hell and take quite a beating
But then so are S&W
I used to think you paid for the name with S&W but that is not all you get, the triggers are beyond belief for smooth pull and clean break when shooting.

Don't get me wrong I own a GP100, and would buy another any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I also own a Model 10 and even beat up nasty run ragged as a service revolver it is internally solid as hell and still has that smooth as silk pull and clean crisp break that I spoke of.

In my mind regardless of caliber you can't go wrong with either one, toss a coin and pick a caliber.

S&W 460V
S&W 686 Competitor
S&W 686 3" or 5" Talo
Ruger SP101 3" .357
S&W 69, when they come out with a 3 or 3.5" barrel version

1) "Full size" 357 Mag: 4 or 6 inch Ruger GP100 or S&W 686
2) "Compact" J frame size 38/357: 2 or 3 inch S&W 60 or Ruger SP101
3) Single Action: Ruger New Vaquero, 45 Colt/45ACP
4) 22: S&W 617 or 63 or Ruger Single Six or Bearcat
5) 44 Mag (take your pick, 29, 69, 629, Redhawk, Blackhawk)

None. I buy pre-lock Smith & Wessons and Colt revos from when they used to make them besides the Peacemaker. ;)

Ruger Bearcat Shopkeeper .22 LR 3” (small frame plinker)
Ruger SP101 or S&W Model 60 Chief’s Special .38Spl/.357Mag 3” (kit gun)
S&W Model 638 Bodyguard .38Spl 1.875” (J-frame CCW)
S&W Model 67 Masterpiece .38Spl 4” (K-frame informal target)
Ruger Super Blackhawk .44Spl/.44Mag 4-5/8” (SAA)

1. S&W M&P 340
2. S&W 625 PC
3. Weirauch (EAA) Bounty Hunter stainless 4½" .45 Colt
4. S&W M&P R8
5. Magnum Research BFR 10" .45/70

Some more than $800 though but your budget might increase over the stated time span.

If I were to buy 5-6 new production I'd grab mostly S&W or Ruger.

Jframe/Sp101 in 357 w/a 2" barrel.
GP100/686 in a 4" barrel.
Blackhawk in either .357 or .45Colt depending on your caliber preference.
S&W 629 w/6.5" barrel.
Then I'd end with a Jframe/SP101 in .22lr

I deviated a little from that plan with my own purchases as I wanted a revolver that chambered my 45 ACP reloads. A bunch of moon clips was easier than buying another setup for .44mag/special and I already had a bunch of components. So I grabbed a 625 rather than the 629. Other than that I'm following the above plan when it comes to new production revolvers.

Howdy

Although I love and collect Smiths, I am not interested in anything they make today. Nothing.

I have bought a couple of Ruger New Vaqueros new in the past few years, and if I felt the need for another I would have no problem buying one. That's about it as far as present production revolvers are concerned.

I buy used revolvers all the time. But again, nothing that S&W currently produces. They just don't do it for me.

1) Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 44 Magnum
2) Ruger Match Champion
3) Ruger Redhawk in 357 Magnum
4) S&W 327 TRR8
5) S&W 625 for competition and range use

Ruger Bearcat Shopkeeper .22 LR 3” (small frame plinker)
Ruger SP101 or S&W Model 60 Chief’s Special .38Spl/.357Mag 3” (kit gun)
S&W Model 638 Bodyguard .38Spl 1.875” (J-frame CCW)
S&W Model 67 Masterpiece .38Spl 4” (K-frame informal target)
Ruger Super Blackhawk .44Spl/.44Mag 4-5/8” (SAA)

Let me add, not a one would cost more than $700 NIB, and most are under $600.

Oh, I forgot about the Ruger Blackhawk comvertible in 45 Colt and 45 ACP.

No Ruger will ever be owned by me or mine. Bill Ruger offered to make his magazines 10 rounds provided the govt mandated all others the same.

Ruger SP101 3" in .357 Mag
Ruger SP101 4.2" in .22 LR
S&W 57 6" in .41 Mag
Manurhin MR73 4" in .357 Mag
Ruger LCR 1.875" in .38 Spc

I really wish there were more current production DA .41s :banghead:

Bill Ruger died 12 years ago and the company did a complete 180 before his body was cold. If he could see what they were doing today he'd be rolling in his grave.

I don't understand how someone can condemn a company that offers virtually everything gun owners want and fights hard for the 2nd Amendment just because one man, who's been dead more than a decade, was a jack***.

I like Rugers, my picks if you're looking for heirloom shooters:

-Ruger Vaquaro, 3.75" Davidson special, .357 magnum

-Ruger SP101, 2.25" engraved Talo special, .357 magnum

-Ruger GP100 Match Champion, 4", .357 magnum

-Ruger GP100 6" .357 Magnum

and since you want a .44 magnum....

-Ruger Super Blackhawk , 3.75" distributor exclusive with either Bisley or standard grip as you prefer, .44 magnum.
