It depends on what your rifle prefers. .50 cal has generally been considered the pivot point between 3F and 2F. There are plenty of people who use 3F in everything they have outside of cannons, and this includes 12 ga/.72 cal.
3F burns cleaner and uses less powder for the same velocity compared to 2F.
As I have two .44/.45 cal revolvers and a .50 cal sidelock I use nothing but 3F as I don't want to carry more than one flask in the field.
