What about Big Dot sights?

I started a previous post on my desire for a narrow front sight, or a wider rear slot for faster sight acquisition. However I think I might like to try XS Big Dot sights. I tried tilting my Glock 26 so that the front sight is above the rear sight just to see if I liked a sight picture with the front sight sticking up all by itself as the Big Dot does. I thought it was a great sight picture and easy to acquire quickly. I am still considering the standard dot. I might get this MGW Tool to install them myself.

It was plenty big, I thought. The problem is that the sight picture is not exact. At a distance of even 15 yards, it was not precise enough for me.

It's not the front sight, it is that the rear sight is so shallow, that finding the center was not a quick event for me. I guess that finding it quickly at close range, it probably does the job very well. I didn't think it did that job any better that a convential sight arrangement, cause that is pretty much a point and shoot situation. I am speaking from a "game" (IDPA, IPSC) point of view.

i personally think that the big dots are the best sights to have on a defensive handgun. i had them on my glock 19, and i have a set on my xd sc,they are fast and they are accurate regardless of what the folks on various forums say they are capble of hitting pepper targets at 100yds yep that is right. mr yeager has done it, with em on his glock 19. every carry gun i own now or in the future will have a set.

Got the standard dot on my G30. Really like them.. Hard to beat inside self defense ranges, 21 feet...

I have the standard dot on my pcr,it's plenty accurate.

This sight came on my SIG P245. No, this sight is not for bullseye shooting, but it is quick to get on target at the normal tactical range from three to 14 yards. Follow-ups and double-taps are quick and sure.

I have the standard dot on my Sig P226. I have used just about every brand and format of night sight available.

These are hands down, without a doubt, no question my favorite sights I have ever used.

And they are more accurate then I will ever be.

Whatever works for you. A Novak's square notch rear and a Dawson Fiber Optic front is my best irons with these 57 yo eyeballs.

Maybe that will change after I get Lasik next year.

Bought the Big Dot

I bought the Big Dots and installed them myself. I took my G26 to the range and they worked very well. That dot sticks right up in front and is easy to place on the target quickly.

glad to hear that you like em the more that you shoot with em the better you will get with em and the more you will like em.

Big Dot's on 3 of my 4 Glocks. Set for the newest (G26) sometime in the next month or so.

I have/had XS Big Dot night sights on my HK USP. I got them when they first came on the market.

I feel they are a great concept that does not translate well into practice for me. I prefer a more narrow front sight, highly visible, with a defined notch in the rear.

That being said, they are well made, the tritium has stayed bright, and they may be the perfect addition to your firearm depending on your shooting style.

My 228 nightstand gun has the XS Big Dot night sights because I consider them the best for defensive shooting, especially in close quarters and low light conditions.

When I shoot this gun at the range, I practice at 7 and 10 yards and shoot for tactical, self defense. That's the whole point.

They are good sights.

I have them on my G17 and G26 and can group at around 4" at 25 yds. which is more than enough for a defensive handgun. The problem is, you really need to concentrate to make accurate hits at that distance and that slows me down. Out to 10 yards I center hold with great results. Past that I use the top of the front dot and I find that I print about 2 inches high at 25 yds. Transitioning from the center to the top of the dot depending on distance is distracting to me. After a few thousand rounds it still isn't second nature.

My other concern is that they have 2 set screws in the rear. I'd rather have a pure friction fit rear sight for durability and reliability.

Aside from the great speed as self-defense distance, they also are snag free. They are great for any light situation, especially from a dark room to a bright room or vice versa.

They are fast, though though not perfect. I may go back to the Ameriglo Operators. I like a square front sight post with some white on it that I can file down to give me a dead nuts reliable zero out to 25 yds and beyond. The Operators, in my opinion are the best 24/7 compromise between speed and accuracy.
